2014 Valkyrie 1800

Seminole, Florida

« on: February 28, 2010, 11:48:57 AM »

I just got back from my pre-Daytona shakedown ride and realized I am almost totaly blind now riding. My eyes just keep getting worse, I am not a candidate for Lasik surgery. I used to just tough it and wear my sunglasses, that won't work anymore. Then I tried the clip on sunglasses, not enough sun protection, they actually let more light in, because they do not wrap around and I find myself squinting real bad. They don't offer enough wind protection either.
I recently tried contacts with my good wrap around sunglasses. They get real blurry after a couple hundred yards (I also have bad dry-eye) today they got so bad, I ripped them out and tossed them on the road, wearing my prescription glasses home. I haven't worn my fullface helmet in 20 years, WAY too hot in Florida, so that option is also a no go.
What do some of you all do, I know I can't be the only one with this problem. Last year I had to stop riding before sunup or after sunset because of my eye problems, just keeps getting worse on the bike.
Has anyone tried the old people sunglasses that are supposed to fit over your prescription glasses? do these work for anybody? I was thinking about prescription sunglasses, although that's not covered by my insurance and my eye's have been getting worse every 6 months, that could get expensive.
Any and all input would be helpfull and much appreciated, If I can't get this licked quickly, Daytona will have to be a no-go this year.

Do a search, but I have prescriptiongoggles.com for myself. I know of about 4-5 other companies who sell like products. If they are not dark enough for you, use some window tint film.

i went to my local eyeglass place..bought a pair of wrap around sunglasses and had prescription lenses put in them..they work really well. i like you wore just my regular prescription glasses for years..but last year every friggen bug that flew within 10 feet of me would end up under my glasses and right into my good eye..i'm legally blind in my left eye..why they could'nt pick that one is beyond me. after getting the wrap arounds that went back past my eyes and fit around my cheeks alittle tighter..no more bug problems..no more dry eye syndrome and no more watery eyes when it got chilly at night...BTW you can get any lense put in them..i went with the transition lenses and they work great.

i have wrap around sun glasses also.  make sure you get ones that are polorized, that gets rid off all the glear, great on the water!  i also am not a canidate for lasik, too thin of cornia's.  can't wear contacts, never had a pair that wasn't blurry.  i paid about $185 for mine.

i know what you're going through!

Kit has a hard time seeing objects far away w/o her glasses. She has wore her glasses before but I don't like it incase they shatter. Can you get prescription saftey/tinted glasses? If not at least get'm in safety and wear some sorta tint over them. If you had luck with the contacts but eyes keep dring out, there are drops for chronic dry eye. Starts with a 'R'. I seen commercials for them alot. Also, at least up here, they have discounted eye glass places. She goes every year and gets 2 pr for less then $100.
Not sure if you wear a helmet or not since you dont wear the FF anymore, but I also have trouble with sun and it makes me squint. Then it gives me a head ache. So I opted for the visor. I can pull it right down to my glasses and its great. Tried a hat but I get to much 'lift' with it and blows off. If you do wear a helmet you maybe able to get a darker and larger visor for the front. It may help.

I had polarized sunglasses once. Looking thru the eom shield gave it a rainbow effect. It was awful.  Undecided

Tundra, I'd get a good wraparound foam enclosed set of specs with a polarized prescription "distance only" lens (single vision is cheaper than bi/tri/verilux focals).  (I have Wiley-X SG1 glasses, with my single vision script in polycarb/polarized lens)  The problem of course is that some prescriptions require more correction than can be satisfactorily put in a wrap around set of lenses....like what is  called a "base 8 curve."  Any worse, and my script could not have been put in my Wiley glasses.  What happens is the lenses will be clear straight ahead, but as you look to the side everything becomes a blur, and most optometrists and glasses making places know what can and can't be done with certain lenses and scripts.

To save money, IF you have a good pair of single distance vision clear glasses that are not too large, you could experiment with a set of the fitover type sunglasses, and still use a half helmet with tinted face shield.  What I do NOT do is ever wear my trifocals while riding, especially at night.  Those glasses are great around the house and while working at a desk/computer, but I cannot see to ride with them anywhere near as well as with single vision 'distance only' glasses.

I you use these in combination with a windshield and a scorpion EXO100 DOT half, with drop down tinted face shield, the protection is pretty complete.  Or any half that will take a face shield.

BTW, polarized lenses took away all glare/rainbow/gas cap reflection in my IS windshield.

I'm in Florida too and know what you mean about a full face.  That's why I wear a HJC AC-2m half helmet.

But, would something like this help you.......

I hava novel idea, what about a Wind Shield.

Although I wear a full face CPAP device so I don't stop breathing at night.

So I know about the dry eyes thing all too well.

If your presciption glasses are covered under your plan, get two pair and have the optometrist tint the lenses on one of those pairs of glasses.

This may work better with your insurance.

Just thought of another option you might try.

Ole Detonaotr has a half or skull or skid lid if you will.

His has a handy device that a wrap around pair of sunglasses flip down at the push of a button or lever.

Cycle Gear or just about any Motorcycle Dealer that sells helmets has these in either the full face or half style helmets.

Should fill the bill for yah.

Super Large Al and Slightly Balding Al as well.

I know when I use to wear Oakley M Frame sun glasses they had built just inside the bridge of the nose area a rubberized holder to hold your spectacle type script lenses (lens and frame around the lens only, nothing to go behind your ear). Seemed like a good idea. I had wondered if a decent pair of prescription glasses might help with my night vision.

Unfortunately, I avoid night driving whenever feasible due to this.

that I wear when driving any vehicle.  But I also wear a HJC flip-up all the time with a tinted shield in the down postion when it gets real bright out.  And you know where I live and yes I have sweat running out of my helmet in the summer and thank goodnes the liner is washable. Cheesy

These are perfect for me. These are flip ups with a separate Rx insertable that snaps into the nose piece.
If it gets cloudy or dark just flip'em up and the Rx remains in place to see or you can even snap out the Rx frame and use as plain sunglasses.

And, they're very comfortable under a 3/4 helmet too!
I'm not sure, but may be a problem under a full face lid.

$$$ - can run $400.00+ Very well worth it for Rx combined day/night without having to switch or change-out. Just flip-up.

Available through most Optometrists.

Ditto on Scorpion; I tried on a half with the drop down shield and it works great, I`m just not sure on the fit. Roll Eyes I think I will try to find a Dealer that sells Scorpion and wear one inside store for a while.  Undecided Selling for about $90. in my State. The drop down would allow me to wear my glasses instead of sun.

Hard, bi-toric contact lense wearer here.  I have bought 2 pair of riding glasses from a company called 7 EYE.  They used to be called PanOptx.   Lenses wrap towards the side of the eyes, have durable foam cups for wind protection, vented to stop fogging (they have fogged up while standing still when first putting them on...never fogged up on the road).  I went for the photochromatic lenses that darken in the sun.  I wear them with a set of "croakies" that I tighten up and they fit snug, but very comfortable.  I reccommend these highly.   cooldude

Hey Tundra. Somnething else for your consideration. You're not to far from the Red Barn flea market in Bradenton and I'm thinking that you have some kind of flea market near you. I have sorta the same problem, where I'm not a candidate for surgery and need glasses to see WELL. The Red Barn has a shop that sells cheater-readers in .25 increments; 1.00 - 1.25 - 1.5 - 1.75 etc. I wear 1.00 with clip-ons over them and they work excellent. They also might have them in true sunglasses, but not in the lower magnifications. I've been getting 1.00 and 1.25 sunglasses over at a fleamarket in Stuart FL. This won't help before your ride to Daytona, but it's something to keep in mind. Most Dollar Stores, Wal-Marts have these cheaters too and many have the clip ons to go over them as well.

OK...I did lot's of shopping, prescription goggles, prescription sunglasses and the Wiley-X biker sunglasses.  Also looked at the "fit-over" sunglasses, I didn't care for the fit. I decided against the goggles because my current non-prescription goggles fog up on me real bad in the florida heat and humidity. I really liked the look and fit of the Wiley-X, but for $500.00 they are primarily biker glasses. I found prescription wrap around polarixed impact lenses, fitted with my prescription. Comination of a current sale at Lens Crafters, plus my 40% discount from insurance only cost me $68.00. They look pretty good, so they should work well for driving and normal sunglass use in Florida. This could be a whole new world for me, hope this works, pick them up tomorrow, Then go for a test ride cooldude Thanks for all the great input!
