I know this is non-Valk, but does anyone have any idea what an old Ruger Blackhawk 44 mag. would be worth? The old guy next door wants to sell it to me. He's showed it to me a few times over the years whenever we're down here in Florida. It's an old gun - not sure how old - but it's in brand new, near perfect condition (no exaggeration) It may be a 'flat top' but I don't know pistols well enough to be sure. I don't know what "Type" or year it is, but I think it's a 71/2" barrel, which would make it a 'little' newer - I think.  I've worked the action and dry fired it, (smooth and perfect) but I won't have an oppertunity to fire it. He's had the gun. . . . for 25 /30 years or more, but he doesn't remember for certain when he got it. He did purchase it new.  I offered $200, he wants $300. . . . . . I'm tempted because I always wanted to 44. Any opinions/info?

IMHO $300 is a VERY fair price... I paid $250 for mine 15 years ago...

Also, check to see if it's a NEW MODEL Blackhawk/Super Blackhawk or the old model. If it's an old model I believe Ruger will update it for free if you want. (NEW MODEL = Transfer bar so that if the hammer drops on a loaded round without the trigger being pulled it won't go boom when it shouldn't. If you want it as a collector, might not convert it, if you want it as a shooter, I'd get it upgraded)

Thank you Serk. It doesn't have a transfer bar. . . . . In fact, the old guy warned me about dropping it when it was loaded.   I don't 'collect' guns; all mine are for 'shooting'  cooldude  This gun really does look brand new, so it sounds like it may have some collectabiliy, eh?

Something else about the "new model" if it is a new model, it will say so on the casting. Of course this doesn't apply to the old converted unit.

I have a new model .44 Blackhawk. Ruger makes a very heavy shooting platform for the .44 ( in this pistol), $300 is a good deal on a well maintained weapon.

I have a Ruger "flat top" "three screw" 7.5" Super Blackhawk, and they are collectors (and shooters).  They are well made revolvers, but get ready for the recoil on the peacemaker style round butt grips with fullhouse loads.  You can get Hogue or Pachmayr rubber grips which look bad, but work great.  $300 for an old model, three screw, flat top .44 Super Blackhawk in good shape is a good price.  When you thumb back the hammer of an old model Blackhawk you get four distinct clicks to full rooster.

Here's a little background info:

$300 is a good price for a 3 screw in very nice condition.  I have one... bought it in '81 (used).  Love that old gun.  Mine has not had the "free upgrade" by Ruger and I would NOT have mine done.  I've heard too many tales of "when I got it back, it's just not as good a gun".  Keep the hammer on an empty chamber and it's just fine.  My father had mine for a few years and carried it while travelling by snowmobile in the arctic of Alaska.  He took a bull moose with a single head shot with it.  Snag it... shoot it, enjoy it.

The tolerances of the older ones are better than those of the newer ones... exception being the 50th anniversary model.  They're STOUT... and will handle the use very well.  I have the Pachmyr Presentation grips on mine... makes shooting it much more enjoyable.

You might want to do a little more research.  If it's a three screw (old model) and if it doesn't have a dragoon style  grip frame (squared off rear trigger guard) it might be worth much more money.  That would make it a Blackhawk, not a Super Blackhawk.  Some of the really old Rugers are real collector items.

At any rate, it's easily worth $300.00

I also have an old 3 screw BlackHawk in pristine shape but in 41. Mag. Mine was never upgraded and "never" will be! I love those 4 distinctive clicks when you pull the hammer back. If I'm correct, you loose two of them when the new safety transfer bar in installed. $300.00 is definitely a fair price!!!!

I like the four clicks too.  Upgrade or new model only have two.

I also never opted for the transfer bar upgrade either (frankly, had forgot about it).  While I hesitate to recommend against a free safety upgrade, they are collectors as is, and this is hardly a carry weapon...... except with a full buscadero cowboy belt & holster rig with bullet loops and a tie down to your leg, suitable for carry in the West and out on the range.  Mine only gets occasional shooting at the range where I load and shoot six.... and I'm pretty good about not dropping my pistols (though it has happened).

Picked mine up (with the full buscadero rig) from a USAF CMSgt who wore it while fly fishing in Alaska streams (for griz) for $175.  That was a good deal in 1988.

I got mine from my dad. Its is a 71-72 44 Mag Super Blackhawk three screw 7 1/2 inch. It will never be converted. I too like the four clicks you get when cocking it.   Mine also has had a trigger job done to it.  Pictured are the Ruger on top. My 44 Mag Desert Eagle and my 44 Mag Derringer.

HA, I have that little stainless American Derringer .44 mag too.  What a joy to shoot full house 240 JHPs out of too......not!  You have to hold on or it can sail over your shoulder (or hit you in the nose).    Had a buddy load me up some nice #12 birdshot rounds for it.  It's actually two ounces heavier empty than an airweight Smith J frame.

FYI and to clear up misunderstandings.

When Ruger does the upgrade ALL parts are returned to you.

So you can have the gun either way.

Nothing is done to the gun it is just a parts swap.

You may or may not like the new parts, if you do not, put the old ones back in.

Good point... Here's Ruger's FAQ on the matter:

http://www.ruger.com/service/FAQs.html#Q98

From there click the drop down and select the "Old Model" Single-Action Revolvers item...

Heres mine after Ruger refinished it at the Ruger factory. Great Job and a good price. It was covered in rust and needed it.
I've seen them "sell" at gun shows for almost double that price.

I'd pull the trigger on that (so to speak) I've always wanted one. I select my guns very carefully these days, because once it's in the gun safe it never leaves. I've sold a few guns over the course my life and always regreted it.  Cry  I'm still jonesing for that S&W model 66 I sold 20 years ago.
