Hey Robin, here's some places you might want to check out.
The Wright Bros. Memorial and Jockey's Ridge in Kitty Hawk. Last time I took 64 to the coast was 2000. It was 4 lane about 1/2 way from Raleigh to the coast. It may be 4 lane all the way by now. Not sure on that one.

Only thing I can think of in Wilmington is the Battleship and Arlie Gardens.

I hear Old Salem in Winston Salem is nice but I've never been there.

You can catch a boat in Beaufort or Atlantic Beach to take you out to Cape Lookout.

And I think you can catch a boat somewhere that will take you into the Great Dismal Swamp. That's one I plan on checking out someday.

If I think of anything else I'll give you a call. Wish I could be more help but we just don't get down that way. Never have cared that much for the "flatlands" other than the beach.

Most or all of these may be seasonal so you would want to Google them before you go.
