Ok, I have the tank and airbox out so far and have learned a lot about my bike.

The diaphragm on the petcock looked good but I went ahead and replaced it with the plate a fellow member made to convert it to a manual switch.  I will also be adding an electric shutoff and filter inline.

I also learned that the previous owner had put a K&N air filter in and was using the prefilter.  The plugs show that it was running rich so I will be digging all the way into the carbs.

I have read 2 schools of thought...one being to remove the carbs completely and one to leave them on to work on.  Any suggestions from those who have rejetted?

Also, I have found what appears to be the remnants of a smog setup that was not completely removed.  I plan on finishing its removal while in there.

Ok, I am not going crazy.

I had to double check my VIN to make sure.  I DO have a 49 state model but it has a lot of the guts the smog system has. 

Can anyone tell me why this is?

All the 49 state Valks have the 'smog' stuff (Pair Valves, tons of hoses...)...  CA versions have even more (Charcoal canister, ect...).

I have been doing a lot of review reading in prep for the install of the 38's and now have second thoughts.

The reason I was going to install the 38's was to prevent foul-up and also check how many turns the 35's were set at as my bike seems to be running too rich.  Is there any easier way to do this other than pulling the carbs.

The jets are screwed in tight!

If you are going to replace the 35's with 38's you will make it richer running.

The pilot screws are the only adjustment on the carburetors and the can be accessed from outside the carburetors.

Aaahhh...ignore my noobisms.

I will check that and sync them first and see how that changes things.
