Any way to get from Lake City (route 149) to Ouray without having to go all the way up to Montrose and back down 550? There is a couple of backroads on the map but am not sure if they are passable. Thanks!

Valker

The road from Lake City to Ouray or Silverton is a 4X4 trail only. I certainly would not take the Valk, and I will ride it almost anywhere.
I ride a motorcycle because nothing transports me as quickly from where I am to who I am.

Valker, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for your help!

I think the only paved routes are the one you mentioned and south through Creede.
On a side note, have you seen the news regarding the rock slide on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon?

Just an FYI, the south way around is the good one!  :cooldude: Million Dollar highway.

I have no idea what you're planning. What are you planning?

Just be careful on Red Mountain Pass.  It can get cold real quick (think snow also) and some of the drivers don't exactly pay attention to what they are doing.  With no guard rails in places, it is a looonnng way to the bottom :cooldude:

not sure exactly if this helps but we went from montrose to ouray west to telluride south to delores and cortez to durango
then north on 550 the million dollar highway

sweet ride indeed

I am embarking on a 29 day bike trip in June. I will cover just shy of 9,000 miles. I plan on hitting Route 550 in Colorado but due to time restraints, picking someone up in Vegas, we have to sort of scoot through Colorado quickly. After that, it is on to California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota ... then home to Illinois. 3 or 4 guys are going and we are calling it our 2010 Bucket List Trip since none of us have been to the West Coast. Really anxious to get going but have to wait until the day after father's day. I have spent the last month or so researching scenic roads and sights so as not to miss anything important. Will be on the coast for a full two weeks.
Hoping and praying that my Valkyrie Interstate, with 109,000, does just fine. Ahhhhh, she can do it!!!

Nothin to it. Its a beautiful ride but at 11k feet the weather changes every 15 minutes.
The cagers are dangerous because the views are amazing. Pay attention to the canyons because we saw snow in August. From Tucson,,, snow?? wotdat?
That will make 118000. barely broken in.
