Riding back to Manchester form White river junction today was almost my last ride.  On 93 south just south of the route 89 junction a pickup truck passed on my left (4 lane interstate) as he passes (I'm doing just of 65) I notice his pickup is full of stuff on top of which are several wooden doors and NOTHING  is secured in any way.  He drops in front of me after only being maybe 4 car lengths ahead of me and suddenly one of the wooden doors (about 3' x 6') goes airborne and flipping all over in the air,,, I made all the right lucky decisions and dodged the door and kept the Valk up.  At this point I am in a rage fueled ever more by the huge dose of adrenalin running through my body, I crack the throttle and come up along side him and realize he had no clue what just happened, so I was yelling that he was loosing his load and just about took me out, he gave a blank look and said sorry....  I suggested he pull over and secure the load he shook his head.  SO I gave him the  1 finger salute and cracked the throttle again and kept it going,, I wanted to get to the upcoming toll booth long before he did in the hopes as usual a State Leo would be hanging around,, there was.  I pulled up along side and quickly explained the situation and right about then along came the jackass the trooper stepped out and flagged him down.  After he run up one side and down the other side of him he wrote out citation for the unsecured load.  takes all kinds,  Thank good it wasn't a new rider behind him!  Had he acted remorseful  pulled over  to secure the load i would have let it go.  They're out there, keep your eyes open!

I got behind a dump truck out of New Orleans one afternoon.  A piece of sheet metal flew out of the back and would have taken my head off if I had not seen it coming.  Scared the beejesus outta me.

DITTO THAT!!

even though some people don't think it could happen, it can, and obviously does!!

an old co-worker had a car two vehicles in front of him with several sheets of plywood tied to it's roof with nylon straps when, you guessed it, the straps snapped!  he said it was a miricle no one got hirt, he said it was kinda cool the way they just flew up in the air like a deck of cards!!

Close call!  Glad the offender got his due.

A friend of ours in a cage was driving on I25 through downtown Denver last year and a pickup in front of her had an unsecured extension ladder in the back.  It flew off the truck and landed in front of her longways and she managed to drive over it between the wheels without hitting it.  If a bike hit the ladder, it would have resulted in death when the bike went down in front of dozens of cars going 65.

BTW, I won't ride my bikes in downtown Denver.

Sorry to hear about the incident, but glad you made all the right moves. Sorry we can't seem to keep all the Massholes down south here, great response from the trooper. And here I thought it was safer riding up north...

In my time following others down the road I've learned to watch closely for a couple other things. Charcoal grills and appliances, mainly stoves. Both have tops that are not really secured and when people haul them in trucks or trailers they NEVER tie the lids down. One good road bump and 65 mph make the tops/lids come right off the load.

Wasn't on the cycle but could have been.
Was in Sioux City last summer taking my Daughter to a Doctor's visit. When we were done, we were headed down I-29. It was an extraordinarily windy day.
There were huge white caps on the Missouri River.
There is a bridge that traverses a creek that feeds into the Missouri.
I briefly looked at the white caps on the river and looked back to the road and there was a huge metal box right in front of the truck, skidding down the Highway.

I am on the brakes. There are cars all around me. I'm hoping the guy behind is paying attention. Got the side of the bridge to my right. I'm thinking "Crap, crap, crap, what the hell is that and where did it come from?

The big metal box is (was) a brand new huge stainless steel gas grill that blew right out of the back of a pick up.

I was pissed. Didn't hit it and was able to stop and get around it as it was traveling the same direction I was for a time anyway.

You just never know.

I saw a craftsman tool box in a back of a truck roll to the tailgate as the driver took a corner the drawers all opened, all the chrome sockets and wrenchs spilled out everywhere as the weight shifted the topbox came off and the lower box came over the tailgate. It was at night and it sure was pretty as the car lights shined on all that rolling chrome. It was a mess to clean up, felt sorry for the poor guy in the truck trying to recover his tools and dodging traffic.

Highway guy here.  Spent the vast majority of my working life on/in the highway.  Its a junkyard out there.  If "it" travels over the highway, sooner or later "it" will end up in the  middle of the highway.  Big - small - and everything in between . . . it will end up there.  If it doesn't get run over, it gets blown over to the side and over the bank, provided there is one to go over.  Anything and everything.  Is why I seldom right after dark.  Is why I don't ride to work in the spring of year when its dark out in the morning.  I've seen to much sh!t out there that would spoil your day.  Yrmv,

I was never so happy to have a windshield as I was last weekend. A 6 inch piece of 2x4 flipped up off the road and hit the shield at perfect bust ya in the nose height. I had closed my eyes and ducked my head so it would hit the top of the helmet, all over in a split second and the shield wasn't even scratched.
