I am planning to change the throttle cables on the 2K Tourer because the metal on the  connectors are rusted. When I looked at the cables on my 99 I/S, I noticed they where routed differently. (See Pics). Has anyone installed I/S throttle cables on a Standard or Tourer? I looked at both carefully and didn't notice any difference in the routing. It seems that would work, unless someone knows of a particular difference, perhaps electrical or something. TIA

The connector chrome is junk. Mine are rusty and I have seen others that are rusty also.
Is the norm to replace with OEM/ aftermarket?
Does someone make SS ones?

Yes I consider mine junk also, yes there are stainless steel braided ones out there, I'm too cheap to buy them, don't like the way they connect and will probably stick to OEM's, would like to keep it as original as possible.

Iirc, the cables are the same.  The switchbox is different.  The I/S switchbox has the cables enter on the bottom where the Standard/Tourer enter from the front.  I couldn't adjust the brake lever where I wanted it since the cables were in the way on my Tourer so I installed the I/S box.

I've had the braided ones on my IS for a few years now, don't remember which brand, maybe Motion Pro (?) and they're as good as the day they went on. They're slightly longer than stock but fit fine. Worth the money I reckon.

I was thinking my thread was forgotten, thanks X-RING, I'm in the process of ordering a switch box for an interstate from HDL. They are running about 58 bucks for an I/S and 68 bucks for a Tourer, go figure that one. With the cables running under the brake lever, vs on top of it, gives that part a cleaner look.

The IS switch box looks like it might give a few more inches for the cables to accomodate additional rise in the handlebars or risers.  I may have to look into that for my poor shoulder.

2K Top Picture Tourer, Bottom 99 I/S
[/quote]Little over a month or so ago I purchased a 2k unkept Tourer and wanted to change the throttle cables to route like the ones on my 99 I/S. I finally found a handle bar switch housing with cables, wiring, and a super vista cruise all in tack from Pinwall. Everything was good to go except on Bl/W wire. After I studied the electrical schematic, I decided to remove the switches from the Tourer and install them in the I/S housing, which was the item I really needed to re-route the cables. My picture of the I/S will show how the cables are now routed on the Tourer, as I didn't take a new picture. Hope this helps for anyone wanting to perform the mod.

If the rust is surface rust without any significant pitting:
then use 4 ought steel wool and a good grade auto cleaner wax and polish.

The rust will be removed leaving a shiny waxed surface that will look good for some time.
Then steel wool and wax again.

Same process will remove surface rust on chrome with out scratching.

The reason the Interstate keeps the chrome parts of the throttle cables much better is the benefit of being behind the fairing, out of the wind-stream, rain-stream, dirt-stream.  Take your pick!

I decided to remove the switches from the Tourer and install them in the I/S housing.
I'm wanting to do this because I have a bad switch and I like the routing of the IS switch box.  So what I need is the guts from the Standard switch box, housing from the IS switchbox and cables from the IS?  I don't think the elbow fitting on the Standard cable will fit the IS switch box.  Please tell me if you know different.
