I have a '98 standard that the past owner added what looks like Champion bags. I really like them and the lining inside. I'm in the process of adding an IS trunk and I'm facing bag lid issues. Not sure if I can mod the hinge on my bags or I'm going to have to buy IS bags and sell my Champions. Any thoughts?

I encountered the same problem with my Tsukayu bags. What I did was take the hinges off, took them apart. Reinstalled the pin in the one part and on the orher half of the hinge had the bottom loops machine cut to make it a hook. Reinstalled the altered hinges. Works great. This way you can raise the lid and remove it for access. When it is latched on the bag you cannot tell it has been cut and without undoing the latch it is impossible to remove the lid.

The only parts that are different, are the front hooks/hinges (and the cables for hanging the lids on the side, if you want that).
I have Champion bags, and traded the guy I got my trunk from, for his I/S front hooks. I gave him my front hinges (he was making a Super Valk), and everything was interchangeable (yes, the Champion hinges fit his I/S bags, and his I/S hooks, fit my Champion bags). Now, when I open my bags, I just put the lid on my seat, or in my trunk.
You should be able to order the front I/S hooks, from any Honda store.

Thanks for that info. It is well received.
By the way. The champions look so close to the Honda ones I wonder. Mine have the guard around the bags as well as the rack on top the lids. Could they be the HondaLine accessories and fit the champion bags.

I'm pretty sure the 'lids' to my Champion bags are 'double wall'... Never thought of drilling through the lids, for the racks, so I'm not sure. As far as the Honda bag rails (around the bags) I would think that they might fit, with some 'fitting' Here is an older picture of my bags with the Champion crash bars... Black Dog

I asked that question about the Honda bag rails here a couple weeks ago. Smokin' Joe says they fit the Champion bags and provided this picture as proof....... I assumed they'll fit, but in the pic, the bags rails don't look level and look as though they're slightly angled down towards the rear. Maybe it's just me or the angle the photo was taken.....don't know. But then again, there was an ad in the VRCC classifieds a week or two back. In it, someone had a set of Honda bag rails that they were selling. They said that the reason they were selling them was that they had the Champion hard bags on their bike and the Honda rails wouldn't fit. So, the debate continues I suppose.

That is a picture of my buddy bike. He lives around Hattiesburg and still rides the bike. He is coming over next weekend and we are rebuilding his forks and installing steering bearing. If you need any info let me know and I can see how they are mounted. David

A tutorial including pics on installing the Honda bag rails with the Champion Patriot hardbags would really be awesome......hint, hint.

BF, you obviously didn't look at the pics I posted showing the bottom and back of those bags and the Hondaline bag rails. Here's the link http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,13809.0.html. Got look at the last post. Marty

No, I guess I didn't. Don't remember seeing those. Thanks. From those pics, it looks like they'll bolt right up.
However, to clarify, are they a direct bolt-on/fit? Or, is there some degree of massaging to do get 'em to fit/work?

From my understanding you'll be doing some fab. You'll have to drill the bottom of the bag to attach the bottom mount of the rails.

Here is an older picture of my bags with the Champion crash bars... Black Dog Black Dog...that's the first picture I have seen of you bike where the rear wheel was visible. Is that a custom wheel, or is that some sort of "bling" that has been added to the stock wheel?

Jim,
Yep, both front and rear, are RC Component 'Smoothies' (solid disc wheels)... Like so many other things on my bike, they are no longer available. I powder coated the center of the brake rotors and the rear drive hub when I put the wheels on.

I ordered the Honda IS hinges. The hinge for the bag came in first all all looked promising. I just got the back ordered hinge that goes on the lid. Just doesn't look like it will attach to the lid in a way that will work with the hinge on the bag. What I ordered from HDL was:
81317-MBY-000 HOOK, SADDLEBAG LID 81318-MBY-000 CATCH, SADDLEBAG LID
Going to take another look at it. Wonder if anyone with Champion bags could post a pix of the hinge area with the IS hinges installed. I think I have Champion bags. With the lid installed. My upper hinge on the Champion is bolted on horizontal. The IS upper hinge appears to want to bolt on vertical.

cef2lion, Like I posted earlier, I've got the Champions, and traded front hinges for the I/S 'hooks', from the guy I got my I/S trunk from... Here's a pic of the underside of my lid, showing the 'hook' and how it mounts... Here is a pic, taken of the 'loop' where the 'hook' grabs on... And one more pic, showing the nuts that hold the 'loop' on the front of the bag (picture taken from inside the bag, looking to the front)... Hope this helps ya out... Black Dog

THose pixs answered the question. I'm missing the plate that bolts to the upper lid. First of your series of pictures. The upper hinge then attaches to that. Wouldn't know without your pictures.
81228-MBY-000 NUT, PLATE
Relief. I was a bit worried standing there with the hinges in hand.
