When I was stationed at Pease AFB in Porstmouth, NH, one afternoon I gave this old crew chief a ride out to his plane. When we arrived(was a B-47), he noticed this young Lt. poking around one of the engines, peering in the front...then the back of it, then back to the front. The old sarge walked up to him and handed him a book of matches, the Lt. asked what those were for. Sarge told him judging by how he was sticking his head inside the intake, it was obvious the pilot light had gone out. The young Lt. just looked at him and stuck the matches in his pocket.

I decided to make sure I was around when the plane was ready to start and sure enough, there was the old sarge standing near the intake on one engine. At just the right moment, he light a match and made it look like he tossed it in the intake. I often wondered what ever happened to that young pup up in the cockpit, I know the aircraft commander was cracking up...I could see him through the canopy. No doubt that wasn't the first time with him and the old crew chief.
