I'm just beginning a search for a sort of "reverse" gps, a device that will allow a person to log on to a computer and find the exact location of this gps. I do a lot of solo riding, and should I happen to disappear, I want someone to be able to find me (or at least my bike- we'll worry about me later....) I'm familiar with several units/services that will do this, but they all have a middleman that you work through, and of course, they all charge a monthly fee. I want to buy this "gps," and be able to give a person the ID to it so they can log in and find me on the internet. No middlemen, no service fees, just buy it and be done with it. Anybody know of such a thing?

None I'm aware of........
Add OnStar to your bike, it does that, but it also has a yearly fee.

Check with your cell phone provider, some cell phone companies offer a computer program that allows you to see where said number is on a map.

I had thought of my cell phone. I think I want something that uses satellites only. Even though that's not guaranteed coverage, it's a lot more reliable than trusting cell towers in the boonies.

My son uses an APP on his iPhone for running and hiking, that he says uses GPS to monitor his route, pace, mles run, altitude etc.. www.runkeepers.com is all I know about it. Of course, it's an ATT phone plan for the iPhone.

There are several devices designed for climbers and wilderness hikers that are designed in this way. Also, I have seen a couple articles on people using these on vehicles. Basically an online service you just log in and it shows you exactly where that particular gps unit is.

I think spot is the closest you are going to get. yeah there is a fee, but I think everyone will have that. I think the only way around paying someone a fee is if you hack some satellites.

There's a guy from near here that swears by SPOT. He travels from Mexico to Alaska, East Coast to West Coast on his BMW R1150GS. I have never used it, so I can't say anything about it. http://www.findmespot.com/en/
