I've got the bolts out that hold the dust cover on and can't get the two halves apart. The Clymers is no help. Any words of wisdom?

Yes, whats the problem with the rear? Just for info its not a beginners thing to do so if you are mechanically knowledgeable then go ahead but if not and the unit is ng then I would recommend going to Pinwalls and buying a used one.

Splines are about shot on the final drive itself, I have a new gear and the matching part that goes into the tire, new seal for the gear, and two other gears. Someone had posted the part numbers a few years ago and I ordered them at the time. I'm a below average wrencher who doesn't mind making the attempt to repair it.

There's no reason that those two parts should not come apart. Probably a little corrosion just keeping them together. Look for a place or two where you can pry the two apart. Do it evenly and don't get impatient.

I'll be very interested in how you do since I'll be doing the same thing in the future. Keep us informed.

Took my time and got them apart last night. The gear teeth on the inside looked like new and the drive shaft splines looked as good as new too. I pulled the main drive gear to the wheel and added new bearings, took my time and put it back in without installing a spacer. Realized I had made a big mistake and pulled it back apart, put the spacer in and put it all back together again. The drive didn't work smoothly so I took it back apart and found I had not pushed the bearing down enough.

Put it back together and it worked great by hand. Reinstalled the pumpkin on the Valk and tested it in first gear without the tire. No leaks, weird noises,  or binding. I need to replace the seal cup that goes into the tire side of the pumpkin and will be giving HDL a call Monday morning. Including screwups, the job took about four hours.

Hi DonO.....I am curious as to how this goes with replacing the ring gear in the final drive.  I have done a few auto diff's and getting the gear lash set properly can be a pain in the butt.  If I remember correctly, there are a number of shims and spacers listed in the parts breakdown for this purpose.  It seems to me there was someone else on this list that did the same thing several weeks ago, but I never heard any results.  In any case, here's hoping that with a load on the gears, they will run quietly.....good luck!

I dont think he delt with the shims just put the originals back in congrats at the out come lets hope it stays that way  cooldude
