Ok, so I road from Morgantown to Charleston this weekend and the bike did great.
The only thing I noticed was that I had a light brown, thin looking oil all over the front of the rear fender on the right side. The more I looked the more it looked as though it was coming from my Progressive shock.
Is it possible for the Progressive to be failing and if so do I have to replace the entire shock or is there a replacement for just the shock part?
It also seemed as though the bike was riding bottomed out which also lends me to think it is the shock.

You can send it to them to be rebuilt. i hope you still have your stockers to use while you wait.

Unfortunately it is what came on the bike.
Do you think I came to the correct conclusion?
It was the only thing I could find that could do it.
At first I thought it may be brake fluid but that is on the other side and is bone dry on that side.
I reasoned that the gear oil is much thicker which eliminated everything but the shock.
The shocks on it say Progressive 1437 230/275 and when I measure them from tip to tip they are 11.5" so I am assuming they are the 11.5" 440's.
Is there a better option I could go with?

I am really confused while looking at the Progressive sight.
My shocks say 1437 230/275 on the spring but look like 412's.
thanks for the offer but once I figure out exactly what I need I will have it shipped 2nd day to me.

I just found where they say 412-4204....
That means 11"
Now the question is to replace them with like or go to the shortest 440's.
Opinions? I have ready many posts on this subject but would like some more opinions. I am 240lbs and rarely do 2 up riding.

Get some stock Interstate shocks.
There is nothing better for you to use.
All the hype about aftermarket shocks is sales talk and BS.

I found some 12" 440-4230's on closeout for $390 after shipping.
Should I go for them?
They are for 270/315 lbs/in and I weight about 240 but do have bags on the bike which usually have stuff in them.
It will save me about $200 and I am thinking I should go for them.
Opinions?

Had the same problem with 412's. My stockers were getting "sproingee" so I bought a set from HDL for $199. About a year & a half after I installed them the LH shock started leaking fluid. They are stock length 412's. Luckily, Rick {Flask} came to my rescue with a set of I/S stockers from his totalled '99 I/S. They've been on ever since while the lightly used 412's are sitting in the storage cabinet. ??? A nice set if Interstate shocks will do ya good, I'm near your same size & I love them.

The 412's are no better than the stock shocks. I don't no about the stock I/S shocks, sounds like some positive feedback from some members there.
My stock shocks on my Standard cr....ped out at about 20K however. I'm your same weight and went with a set of Progressive 12.5 440 Standards and there great, no complaints. Something else to keep in mind, as you drop the rear of the bike it may very well have some impact on the handling. If you're considering Progressives give the Techs a call,it never hurts to get as much feedback as you can. There's no need to rush into something that impacts your riding pleasure, plenty of deals to be had. You'll find the Progressive Web site on the Internet.

I love the 440's, but have a problem with the "4230" part number. For Valk, the std rate springs are 440-4213, and heavy duty rate are 440-4221 (followed by B for black or C for chrome). I'm not sure 4230s are for Valk. Better call progressive before you jump on them.
You could always call Pinwall Cycle and ask if they have a pair of IS shocks in stock that are not obviously leaking or damaged............problem is, they are likely '99s and 11 years' old in addition to miles. You check the classifieds??
Don't know how you rode 11" shocks............. pretty straight and level would be my guess. I'd never go under 12.5", and that's with 29" inseam legs.

Just a word about 412's. We've had them on three Valks, one of them with sidecar, two Gold Wings, one CB900F, never any problem and better than stock. Much cheaper than 440's To each his own. My .02
