Long version:

The old board did not require users to sign in before posting.  Spammers could spew their wares at will.

Here we require users to register.  In order to post spammers will have to pretend to be a real human being, take out a real (but free) email account and look for their confirmation email.  It's more work for them and as soon as they post we clear the post and ban their assumed identity.

Here we have been having a few slip through every day.  There we were deleting hundreds per day.

Currently the registration is set to semi automatic mode.  Anyone who registers will get an approval email and if they receive the email they can activate their own account.  We have it set that way to accommodate the large number of legitimate people who are currently registering.

We are giving serious consideration to moving to a slower, but more secure method with which each registration would have to be approved and activated manually by an administrator.

We have the tools.   We will most likely never achieve 100% avoidance, but we are much, much closer than we used to be.
