My mother is an assistant librarian. The librarian that she assists needed to come to a workshop on the campus where I work. The librarian went to mapquest and grabbed the all so relaiable but long and needlessly complicated directions. The mapquest directions made a simple 20-30 minute commute into a hour and a half struggle by first taking her twenty minutes the wrong direction onto an interstate that also led the wrong way, then bringing her back around.

The librarian asked my mom, "Do you think he takes the interstate or goes someway through the country? Do you think he knows a shorter way through the country?"

Mom responded, "Honestly, I don't know. But if his choices are an interstate or a meandering country path I can be pretty sure he'd take the country route. I also think that he's not concerned with taking the shortest possible route, but instead leaves early, drives faster, and takes the longer prettier way.  He also probably doesn't go the same way twice during a week of commuting if he can avoid it. He probably heads a different direction each time."

Yup, I think Mom has it right.

TOday I jumped up early and took an extra half hour to see some local roads that I haven't been on in a while.  I do try to see as many different ones as possible during the week. Mom knows me pretty well.

She has backed off and let my brother and sister ride with me on occasion. Mom rides with Dad every chance that she gets. It's funny when my little sister leaves the house for the evening often my parents are hopping on a bike to spend some time alone. That's cool.

My mother owns a bike but has little interest in riding her own. She's never the left the yard on it.

The reason my mom knows me so well is because I get it from her. She never goes the same way to somewhere and back again.  I get a lot of my wander lust from her. The motorcycle comes from Dad's side of the family. Together it makes a nice combination: me.  Wink
