Back last summer when I purchased my 98 Tourer I found this board and began reading all I could.
Anyhow I read where a suggested oil filter was a wal amrt brand ST7317 are any of you still using this filter? I picked up another today along with a gal of shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 oil to change out and be ready for the Cheaha ride next weekend.

I use the ST3593A or Purolator pure one PL14459 are larger in Dia than stock. The larger Dia ones are all I use, more filtration area and longer life.

I always paint my filters silver to match the engine.

I use the ST7317 and have never had any problem.  It is supposed to have the pressure valve in it Honda recommends.

I have been in the auto parts biz for over 35 years & I can tell you one thing for certain... You can't judge a part by it's brand name!  Grin
I have read numerous comparisons of oil filters {among other parts} & the WallyWorld line is rated well.
Good, inexpensive yet high quality combo you have selected.  cooldude

Thanks guys for the input on the filter. I know this has been discussed many times as I have read and done the search here on the topic I just wanted to make sure the filter I mentioned was still used and accepted by those of you here. I think a couple reasons the brand was brought up was one it had more element in it than other brands and 2 it allowed for a full use of 1 gal of oil by using the filter mentioned.

Filters are well filters and the brands that we use be it Wally world and Royal Purple and a few others all are made by the same company  Shocked  2funny

They are Champion Labs found this tidbit out while reseaching the RP filters got it from RP themselves. Even called Champion Labs to check for cross on the RP filter !!!

And if anyone is interested the Royal Purple filter number is 10-2867 and Pepboys is supposed to carry them.

Several years ago I picked up the SuperTech filter # ST6607 at WalMart and have been using that # every 4K, for the last 50 to 60K, along with Rotella-T 15/40.

Filters are well filters and the brands that we use be it Wally world and Royal Purple and a few others all are made by the same company

Filters made in the same factory or by the same company are not necessarily made to the same design and performance specs.  There are differences brand-to-brand and this has been well documented.

Great post, VP.

I read a bunch a couple of years ago and wound up with the Purolator Pure One PL14610.  Lots of media.  Lowest micron number I could find.  Highest SAE rating I could find.  (Comes in black or yellow!)

While reading all that and spending time at www.bobistheoilguy.com I came to understand that the bypass valve pressure only comes into play when the filter is sufficiently clogged as to prevent flow-through.

DFG from the same site I have also read that it comes into play during cold oil startup and that a larger filter with more surface area will help to reduce the amount of time the filter stays in by-pass.
reason I use the larger pure one.

The one you are using is fine, but the one with more area and holds a few oz. more oil is the  ST3593A.  Hoser  cooldude

Good point, CA.  The 14610 may not be wider than stock, but it is deeper and has more surface area.

have u cut one open and compared to a stock size one? reason I ask is that on bitog site somebody did that for two filters and just the cans were different sizes. the filter element was the same size. can't remember what brand filter and what application it was.

below is from my org post on the old board. the sq in were from a bitog post from new filters that were cut open.  cooldude
Wal-Mart ST
filters are made by Champion Labs who also make STP, Bosch and Mobil-1 filters.
ST6607 52 sq in of media. same size as OEM
ST7317 62 sq in media same dia 1/2 longer then OEM
ST3593A (160 sq in? not confirmed) larger dia but shorter than ST7317
all of the above have the required 8-11 psi by-pass valve.

From http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterStudy.html Type [5] Filters for Hondas, etc.  (The As Bs & Cs are grades given.)

Filter, Price, Media pleats*depth*height, Sq.In., Drain, Seal, Mech., Media, Comment

Bosch 3300,   $6,   49*.36*1,   34,   Nitrile,   Nitrile,   C,   B,   This is the smaller unit. Nice filter media, but not much of it.
Mobil-1 M1-108,   $12,   43*.39*.96,   32,   Silicon,   Nitrile,   B,   B,   This is the smaller unit. Nice filter media, but not much of it. This was a used filter, hence the color of the media.
Pure One PL14610,   $6,   50*.39*2.36,   92,   Silicon,   Silicon,   A,   A,   This is how an oil filter should be made. The anti-drainback valve is double the thickness of any other here, and obviously seals very well. The media is the best available, and there's a lot of it. The bypass valve is made from a laser-cut piece of stainless steel, and just can't bind or jam.
SuperTech ST7317,   $2,   33*.36*1.9,   49,   Nitrile,   Nitrile,   C,   B,   A   better than average filter at a bargain price.
