Do timing belts deteriorate? I have a '98 Std with 8K miles. Should the belt be changed simply due to age?

8k?!!?!? Tell me that's a misprint!!! Grin
I have a 98 with a little over 50k and I
consider that low mileage.  Wink

I bought it last August with 2200 miles on it. Actually, I have 9K on it now. I put it away for winter and just brought it out a few weeks ago.

After the purchase I took a 5K mile trip.

Only my own experience, not a recommendation. I have 116,000 on my 98 Valk Tourer with the original belts. I do have new ones in the garage, I just haven't put them on yet.

I think your originals are fine unless  been riding in the dirt and dust and what not with the timing belt cover off or have been giving the belts high doses of UV rays with out sunblock!  crazy2

When I was teaching my kids to drive, one of their questions was do I need my lights on, this was around dusk.

I told them if they had to ask, they needed to be on.

Same way with your belts, if ya got to ask, change em out.    Buy a set of NAPA belts and do not let the cams move on ya while ya got it apart.  If ya do, it will spell BENT valves..........

So if ya don't know how to do it, find someone who does and ask them to watch over ya while you do the work.......

I'd say, yes, due to age, they need to be replaced......

For the cost of a belt and the time, I may just change it. While I'm at it, I thought about installing a 4 degree trigger wheel. I don't necessarily need more speed, but my highway mileage isn't very good. My VTX1800 actually gets better mileage.

What should I expect from a 4 degree wheel?

Honda recommends replacement at 100k, but the belt does dry out over time causing noise and if you pull the front cover sometimes you will see the cam rollers with a bit of rubber from the belt on it. This is the belt deteriorating. Will it break not likely but the engine will be quieter with new belts and there will be peace of mind. Like all rubber including tires it dries out, if you look at old belts on cars they do the same so my recommendation is to change them. The cost is cheap and its not hard to do. Valks dont put allot of strain on the belt at all the tension is minimal and the cams dont have much tension. As for the timing wheel its a good idea and will help your mileage and like you said can be done at the same time. Grin

I was told that the belts are good  for the life of the engine, break a belt and you kill the engine. I changed mine at 105k just for peace of mine. I got the replacement at NAPA  just as R J said cheap easy and peace of mind.

I had the belts changed this spring on my 16k 98 std.  The belts that came off looked as good as the new ones.  I do believe I sleep better knowing that I did the preventative maintenance.  I would hate to think of a ruined engine compared to the cost of new belts.

June of 09 I got my IS with 30k.  For peace of mind I had a complete tuneup/inspection done by my wrench(who I trust).  I changed out the belts because they were over 10 years old.  They looked good but when removed they had a few of the teeth either off or coming loose.  I would suggest changing them.  Ist because it is a cheap fix to prevent a disaster, and second it gives you an excuse to look at other things that might become an issue.  Very easy to do, nearly fool proof, easy on the wallet  but, best of all is the peace of mind knowing that you can now go the 100k without thinking about belts.

I replaced the timing belts on my 99 Tourer at around 70k.  They still looked good, but the NAPA belts looked better.  Also put in a 6 degree trigger wheel.

Just for future reference, what is the part no for NAPA belts?

I was just in NAPA yesterday ordering these, until I found out they wanted about $76 for a pair. I'll just order some online instead.

You're likely to get Chinese belts online. They may be fine, I don't know. I do know it would be a b*tch to find out they're no good.
If you're getting them on Ebay, ask the seller where they're made.
