On my ride home from work I saw a field that is sometime used for polo practice and it had the strangest bird thing I've ever seen my own self. There were at least 50 hawks just sitting there evenly spaced and doing practically nothing. I've never seen more then 4 or 5 of this kind of hawk together before. A few of them acted like they were pecking at the freshly mowed grass but I didn't see them pick anything up.

I'm not sure if it was just a flock of migrating hawks and they were on the ground foraging or if perhaps the 30 to 40 mph winds we're having today has somehow grounded them.

Anyone have a clue of what's up with the hawk convention?

Raymond

They must migrating north but I have never that many together.  We had the same wind here yesterday and maybe that had something to do with it.

I have seen at least a thousand buzzards in the air many years ago one summer day in south Texas.  Must have been mass die off somewhere.   Cheesy

The camera didn't get all them in one shot Mr Fudgeness. Count again, I only counted 28 in the picture when I counted it earlier.

Don't count the bird sitting on the fence either.

They're fake...kinda like scarecrows.  The farmer put them out there to keep the moles out of his polo field.  crazy2

You say the grass was fresh cut???  Maybe the mower made a mess of 'mouse/rodent burger', and they were cleaning up the mess...

Just a guess  uglystupid2

Saw it in Colorado a couple of times. Walked over and they were eating on some little mole like critter, babies.

There were hundreds of them. They don't get together to socialize they are eating something.

I got my book out and I think these are Ferruginous Hawks. Book says they're uncommon in the Great Plains. They feed entirely on rodents.

I've never seen more than one hawk at a time. I always thought that they were fairly territorial.
