Need some advice on my fuel leak.....2001 I/S. After smelling gas, I noticed a drop of fuel dripping off the bottom of the fuel valve. I'm pulling the tank off this morning for a closer look. Fuel lines don't appear to be split or cracked (looking while tank is still on) but further inspection may prove different, but that would be too easy. Any advice or suggestions welcomed.....I have not spent much time wrenching in this part of the bike. My suspision is the O'ring on the fuel valve or fuel valve itself????

TIA,
Mark

It was dripping from my buddy Gary's valkyrie when he got it... the previous owner had tried
to fix it  cooldude ... don't try this at home... if you get a "cover set" (and a new screen wouldn't hurt)
from the dealer or HDL or someone, you'll probably be good to go... search "cover set" on the
tech board to get part numbers, and people talking about doing the rebuild, and there's rebuild
instructions in shoptalk...

You can see that Gary's real problem was the munged up diaphragm... by blocking the weep hole
with a ... whatever that thing is ... the previous owner was asking for hydrolock... the petcock
still leaked, but gas also flowed down the vacuum line to cylinder #6 and raw gas would come
shooting out of Gary's pipes when he cranked it.

You more then likely have a bad diaphragm  .....this is not a big deal to repair but Honda does not sell a rebuild kit...but they do sell a diaphragm kit...so when you order it have them blow the parts list and show them what you want...take the valve off the tank, remove 4 screws on the valve, watch how it comes apart...put in the new parts close it back up, makes sure the diaphragm is straight...put it back together on the tank..done job.

You can also gut all the diaphram stuff out of it and block off the vac side with some thick gasket material and make the stock valve completely manual. I've been running mine this way for over 2yrs. Key on fuel on, key off fuel off. Cost is about 50 cents.
