On Saturday I took my lovely wife out for a ride, she on hers (she is proud as a Peacock) and me on the Valk. Well about half way through the ride (taking her through some twists) I thought I would check her tires to see how far she is leaning, and she is respectfully leaning that bike for a new rider, I was impressed. Anyhow I decided that I would check my tires too since my front had around 2K left prior to replacement, the rear was fairly new only 3500 miles on it, well the front was fine and the rear has this monster nail in it. The question is what do you do? Tire repair kit not available and the tire has a slow leak, I decided to keep an eye on the air, leave the coffin nail in and ride home, 100+ miles or so, made it fine and now have an appointment for tomorrow for new rubber. I will tell you knowing that there is a monster nail in your tire is no fun trying to ride home, I made it safe the wife had fun and my tire looks like it has a big Zit on it, the nail caused a blister on the side. I feel real lucky.
Getting a new set of Elite 3's put on it, wondering how they will handle.

I hate Elite 3s.  Mine rode like a pig.  Maybe not enough air at 40psi?

I feel for ya before I caught the boat I had made a 400 mile trip back and forth to my daughters house with my wife on the back and then made a run to sell something about 30 miles from the house.
Something told me to check the bike over and sure enough found a nail in the rear tire so I rode her home and just when I got to my exit for the house she went low not flat mind you but LOW  Roll Eyes so
I limped my way home the funnest part was the clover leaf I had to go thru to get home  2funny but made it home safe.

Which is where she sits now waiting on Daddy to get home and put a new Darkside on  cooldude

Had an Avon on mine so do not know about the Elites

Hey Jack,

I guess I will find out, I have heard nothing but good things about them, and as I have previously stated I was a huge fan of the D206 Dunlop's that everyone hated and I ran like they were on fire. So we will see. I have a friend that ran the Avon Venoms and he hates the way they handle when they are cold or wet, he feels like he is on Ice (no not me uglystupid2)
I will keep you posted if anyone is interested.

Yes, please keep us posted.  I hated mine but you may love them.  If you do, perhaps I will try again in the future.

Knock on wood, throw salt over your shoulder, and never mention it again but I have over 9,000 miles on the rear Avon.
I say that as that is the MOST I have gotten out of any rear tire since I've had my Valk. Four nails have gotten me so far.  tickedoff I won't ride on a repaired tire on a bike, just the way I am.
I hope you have better luck than I have with nails!!!!

Jack,

Will do, I have always been a big fan of the OEM Dunlop D206' s that everyone told me were junk, and in Germany the guys used to laugh at me for running them but they soon stopped when I was passing them in the turns scraping all kinds of solid parts and they would ask how I could do that. I know a lot of people thought bad of the OEM tires but I really had a good run with them, I was getting consistantly around 16k from the rear and 9-11K from the front, again a anomaly but it may be how I ride. So the Elite's will have to prove themselves and I am one who will honestly say yea or nay to something. i.e. I hate the feel of the Metzler everyone in Germany loved. So we will see. But I will keep you posted.

BTW when I get done riding with Smokin Joe at the end of the month I should have a good idea how they work.

Well got the new rubber mounted and as I was picking up the bike the guy at the shop told me I had to see my old (fairly new) tire. When the guy showed the tire to me, I looked inside where the nail puncture was and was staring at 2 1/2 inches of nail sticking through the inside of the tire. All the shop guy said is "I think someone was out to get you". So from now on I will always check around my bike tires prior to taking off, to ensure no one decided to lean a nail against the tire. The guy said that that was a strange size nail to have and for the tire to just  pick it up from the road.

I say it's not THAT uncommon for the front tire to flick it up, and the rear to catch it.

Side note... I'll be in VA on the 14th to buy that Valk your buddy looked at for me.

Woo Hoo!!

Jabba,

Sound great. I guess Don took care of the important stuff for the Valk?

Good luck and have fun riding back, be safe.

He said that except for the couple dents in the tank... the bike was beautiful.  Said no evidence of any fluids leaking ever.  That even the brake fluid was clean and clear.  He listened to it with a stethoscope and was very complimentary of how good it sounded.  Said the carb sync was spot on.  And that the tires were good enough to ride home on without worry.

His final words were... "It seems like a no brainer to me.  I'd buy it."

Good enough for me!

. ...Although I love the way Avons handle...Ive not had good experiences with them...the latest fiasco was when we were on a road trip recently, and had a flat in Arkansas. Apparently the rear had run over "something" and had a nice 1/4 inch "slice" in it. Thats the fouth rear Avon Ive gotten under 4,000 miles on...one I got under 1,000 miles on. Not to mention one front Avon I picked up a nail on.
Thats five flats on the same bike in a ten year period, using one particular brand of tire....Im done with Avons.

In the latest flat, I had another Dunlop E III put on. I got 22,000 miles on my last rear E III and still could have gotten more, as no tread was showing, but chose to go with safety.

So... you're going with Avons = Bad Voo Doo for Timbr?

I get it Brother.  No hassles from me.  Sometimes (Once or twice) I have gone to the garage... suited up, threw my leg over the Valk, fired her up and.... turned her back off and went back inthe house.

Just caught a BAD vibe and wasn't willing to ignore it.

 Undecided
