I don't think I remove the exhaust,do I just remove the bottom bolt on the shocks to let the a arm down far enough to get the axle out?

You can do it that way but you will have to remove the rear hanger nuts and slip something between the exhaust and the bracket so the swingarm will pass by.  OR...you can remove the shocks and lift the wheel above the exhausts.  Dag has a video concerning this...somewhere...the only real trick is taking the brake caliper off with the wheel in the air.  I usually lower the wheel back down once I have removed the axle.

I use two wedges (1 each side) and slip them between the pipes and the frame where they bolt-up.  Push the wedges in until the studs are flush with the frame, to allow the swing arm to drop.

One other trick I've learned the hard way...  After taking the caliper pin loose, press the axle out half-way, remove the caliper bracket and spacer, then press the axle back in place.  Jack it up a bit and slide the wheel to the left on the axle.  If you have trouble with the flange not coming out of the final drive (which I ALWAYS DO!), it is much easier to work it out with the axle in place.  Once I have the flange loose, drop her down and pull the axle out.  Same going back in, press the axle through the wheel, jack her up a bit and slide the wheel to the right until the flange is seated in the final drive, then let her down, slide the axel out half-way and install the caliper bracket and spacer.

Or you can make a strut like the one shown here. It was shown in the Clymer Service Manual so I had one made and worked really well. The second to top hole position is to pull the axle and the very top hole position was to remove the wheel. No need to remove or loosen the exhaust.

Can you post the specs for this?

+1 on the specs.  I ran out of colorful words getting the wheel, spacer, and caliper back on.  Oh yeah, I don't think I will ever take off the rear fender lower section to do this again.  Just would not line back up until the frustration level was at max.  tickedoff

Do not waste your time with a strut.  I stole this from Daniel Meyer:

Just take off your seat, and put a ratcheting strap, bike tie down, over the frame, and loop the ends around the swing arm.  Raise or lower the swing arm to just where you want it.

I use this all the time to remove the rear wheel.

Do it before removing the shocks.  Cinch it up enough so the shocks come off easy, then cinch some more, until you lift the axle above the muffler, then remove the rear axle.

Reverse to install.

Thanks Daniel!

I have a set of soft ties that I used this last time.

Wrapped one end around the axle tube.  The other end went on the upper shock mount.  I had to use man-power to take it on/off...but it worked good.
