OK, here's the deal. four fillups, at 120 miles. One each for three grades of fuel. Speed limit observed at all times, up shifts at 3000 rpm. The results as follows. 87 octane regular, 120 miles, 2.9 gallons used 41.3 mpg 89 octane 120 miles E10 gasohol 3.1 gallons used 38.7 mpg 91 octane premium 120 miles 3.0 gallons used 40.0 mpg one more of 87 octane regular, which by now was pretty well mixed. since the tank was not drained between changes, 3.0 gallons for 40 mpg , Average 40 mpg. Guess we all know now how to get 40mpg, but it ain't much fun. Mostly I rode 2 lane roads with limits 60 t0 65 mph, Kept me occupied for a couple days though.  |

That sounds about right. If I hold my speed at or below 65, I will get 40 mpg. Always 10% ethanol since day one. 2000 I/S w/ 53,500 miles. No desmog...stock air filter.  |

I'm not really sure that was a valid test. If you only added 3 gallons to a 7 gallon tank you were only getting <50% change in octane. I did extensive testing on my Nomad and found that it got better mpg on 87 than higher octane. The big difference though was throttle control or lack thereof.
When I rode with the local HOG's I actually got almost 50mpg, normal was under 40. Most of the time riding with them I could not get to 5th gear. No need to argue the point, that's the facts Jack. I have decided that it is the sweet spot in the RMP's and a steady wrist that gets the BEST mpg.(YMMV)

I only run 91 or 93 in mine... but I have a Dyna 3000 set to "go-fast" and it pings with less than that in her.

I noted that the gas was mixed the more tanks I used, so I guess the first tank was the most valid, however I don't consider any of the milage figures to be much different from each other. In other words, I am satisfied with the fact that the grade of gasoline does not really matter in my Valk. Happy motoring. hoser  |

After 96,000 miles using mosty 87 octane gas in my 98 Tourer I alway get about 30 MPG never much better no matter how I drive. My I/S gets about 37 MPG no matter how I drive ???????

Not to hijack your thread, but I have never seen a vent in the windshield like that, how much air does it allow thru on a hot day? Who makes it? thanks.

Note that he has a Tourer; there's definitely not a 7 gallon tank on it. |

That's a Goldwing vent. It's an option with Clearview windshields and maybe other brands. Mine flows pretty well. Marty |

my I/S sometimes gets 33mpg, mostly 30. how does your tourer get worse milage then the interstate? |

I agree with that. I just got 30 on the new to me IS running HARD. If I ran my STD that hard... I'd have only gotten 26 maybe 27. Jabba |

99 IS as stock as they come, i get 38 riding 2 up most of the time, i get better than that if speeds below 55.

Looks to me that the E10 has more impact (negative) that the octanes.  I have noticed less mpg with the ethonal mix too. I avoid it when I can.  |
