First of all I want to thank all of you for your help.   Sorry nthis is so long but here goes.

My bike (a 2001 interstate) had set without runnung for some time (over a year) due to personal issues.  When I tried to start it nothing but the motor turning over.  I have worked on cars in the past but for some reason was kind of intimidated by the bike. When I called the dealer for an estimate they told me it would be between $1800.00 and $2000.00.  That decided my to try to make the repairs myself.  The jets had gotten clogged.  I got new jets (Stock) and installed them.  Dumped old gas out of the tank and rinsed it out, and while it was already taken apart, did a partical desmog. I just removed the pare valve and plugged the holes on the reed housing  and plugged the vaccume ports.  Reinstalled the carb bank, air box and tank.  Bike started right up, but was spitting fuel everywhere.  I removed and reinstalled the carb bank 4 or 5 times trying to get the fuel leaks stopped.  Also had hydrolock 2 or 3 times but doesn't seem to been any damage as a result.  Finally got a Pingle and new float valves.  Totally cleaned the carb bowls before installing the float needles and putting everything back together.  During this time I changed the oil and filter twice due to fuel in the oil.  This whole process took at least 6 months as I only could work on it for a couple of hours every 2 or 3 weeks.  Finally got everything back together yesterday and cleaned it up.  Starts right up and seemed to run great.  So I went for a ride a few minutes ago.

Now comes the part where I could use some more help.

It is running rough while going down the road.  Seems to do good when I accelerate hard, but while just crusing it feels as if I am on a really rough road.  I also can smell burning oil and the exaust is louder on the left bank.  It was smoking from the left side when I first started but that seemed to go away.  I only rode it for about 5 miles before I brought it back home.  All of the cylinders are firing as each exaust pipe is hot to the touch.

I am going to try to build a carb synk system like I have seen here and see if that helps.

I could use any suggestions.  PLEASE HELP!!!!

Don't give up! Smiley You said you put new jets in it ? did you put mains and slow jets in it ? The slow jets are what are used while just cruising around, and they are always clogging when sitting for long periods. you stated when accelerating it was strong as you were going into the main jet circuit, may be the slow jets.

I'd say the oil in the left bank was from being on the sidestand for so long. (Place a 2X4 under the sidestand for long term storage.) It should burn away in a few miles. (Do you overfill your oil?) This may have slightly fouled the left spark plugs. Pull and clean them. Compare them to the right side plugs. With the carbs having been apart, you might want to have them synchronized and pilot screws adjusted.

I agree that the situation you describe sounds like clogged slow jets.If you've just cleaned/replaced the slow jets, you should get an inspection mirror and a flashlight. You may have rust in the tank reclogging the slow jets. Consider a fuel filter. I hear the goldwing filter works well. I use Golan filers. More expensive but they flow well and claim to filter to 10 micron.
Tank rust can be a problem, especially with a bike that has been sitting for a while.
If that's your problem, check out Caswell Plating, they have an epoxy tank sealer that works well.
Let us know how it works out.

Thanks for the replies.

When I did the re jet, I replaced both mains and slow jets.  I did overfill the oil a little. I put a full 4 guarts in. It shows just over the full line on the dipstick.  Should I drain some out? I am going to sync as soon as I get the sync meter fabricated.  There shouldn't  be a vacuum leak  as all of the vacuum ports are pluged.  I even got the Pingle without the vacuum.  I did put a filter on the fue line as well.  I willl post my progress but it will be probably be slow as I don't have a lot of time to work on it.   Please keepthe suggestions coming.I will try them all and let you know which one/s work.

Your problems sound the same as mine. Runs great under full throttle and slobbers at part throttle and misses slightly at idle. I am guessing that debris located in the fuel line and passages between the fuel shut off and the carb bowls has reclogged your slow jets.  You may have to take it all apart again, buy an o'ring kit and take the carbs loose from each other, clean out the fuel passages and install a filter.

I will be a 3 time loser on removing the carbs again this week. No amount of fuel treatment would help mine and I've tried them all. To help stop hydro lock I inspected the needles and floats very carefully and chucked a 1/2 of a q-tip in a cordless drill and polished (very carefully) the needle seats using carb cleaner on the Q-tip and next WD40.  They cleaned up very nicley and my hydrolock problem on the number 6 carb went away.  My bike was sitting for 2 or 3 years when I purchased it.

Use my polishing procedure on the needle seats at your own risk, if you go overboard on them and mess one up you will need a new carb.

Hope this helps

I did put a filter on the fue line as well.
Your filter could be causing part of your problem.  If you have a filter in your tank then another filter, the fuel flow may be restricted too much.

I would assume if it was restriction of fuel flow the problem would be more pronounced at high flow rates (Throttle wide open for example) The issue he has is at low speed/idle.

I think you are on the right track, the problem is most likely in the slow speed circuit.
