Is anybody headed to Wisconsin and parts west after the rally and taking the northern route through the UP?  I plan to take that route on the way to my daughter's place in the Green Bay area, but my wife is all upset with those plans. She said there's nothing up there and what if.....

Soooo.....I said I'd ask if anyone is using that same route so I can tell her I'll not be traveling alone in the wilderness.

Theres is plenty to do and and see......  What route are you planning? US 2 along the south? Or taking the Northern route? Plenty of towns and Citys along the way....  Cant really get lost.... if you do, just head north or south and yer bound to hit a lake!   Grin.

I have been all around the UP on the bike. Even did the Lake Superior circle through Canada, through Duluth and back to the Lower Pn. That is a good trip and no worries about totally leaving civilization.

Let us Michiganders know your planned route and you will get PLENTY of places to see and stay on the way home.

It might actually be quicker to Green Bay going North than around south around Lake Michigan.

Drop me a line if you want to chat.

If yer headed out on Sunday, I know I'll be headed back that way (to the Milwaukee area), and plan on going right by Green Bay.  While all the details are not set in stone, there may be 2 - 6 of us doing just that...  You will have lots of company.

BTW, it's not that desolate...  I've been up and over the UP on the way to visit the folks from 'Michigans Misguided', many times over the years, and never once resorted to cannibalism to make it home Cheesy

I have to get back to ND someway, so that may work.

A couple of us are going around the north way, into Canada, then down to Inzane.  Arriving Wed. AM.  If anyone wants to ride along, give me a quick PM.

We need to put a sign up on the poster at Inzane, to see who all wants to go together.

That sounds like a good idea. For me it will be the first time through the UP so I'll want to check out a few rabbit trails and take some pictures. Most people probably won't want to do that, but at least my wife will feel better about the number of riders taking the same route.

The north route through upper Michigan is beautiful.  For miles and miles it follows the lakeshore, most of the time within a mile, many times right next to it.

My wife and I will be headed back that way also, she is not good at long distance so we may be what you are looking for as far as riding partners. We will be heading right by Green Bay, I figure we will make plenty of stops along the way.

Sign up sheets at ground zero for the various routes home sounds like a good idea.

If I can make Inzane, I was thinking of going that route to get to the west side of WI to go to E.C. I would get up there for friday and sat then on to Wi sunday. I can't make reservations yet due to other family plan just prior to that. May need to see if someone will let me us a couch to crash on. Are there any little motels near by to get a room if I can pass through Inzane? I'll be watching this post to see whats up on the traversing to Wi.

That sounds good. My daughter lives in DePere...not too far off 41. As I recall from visiting them a few times and driving in the area, you can pick up 41 on the NW side of Green Bay where it junctions with 35.

If you're riding from the Green Bay area to Eau Claire, it'll take you about 4 hours to cross the state. Not much in between the two places, but there are plenty of hotels for sure.

We live in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan and never go around Chicago to get out west.  Even when we lived in the lower part of the state we often took the northern route to head west.  When we do travel west and don't go thru the U.P. we always go south to route 24, then head west, to avoid the congestion and traffic in the Gary, Chicago area.  We were rear-ended by a car north of Chicago in 1999 as we were sitting still in a construction zone.  Don't need to go there again.  Michigan's northern route on 2 is beautiful.  Good roads, light traffic, lots of roadside parks to stop in.

Go THE Northern route! Eau Claire is, Lacrosse-St.paul-Duluth are possible 1 day. Have No Fear. Anyone going Northwest with time on your hands should go up to Copper Harbor,Mi. also seek out a lake Superior Circle Tour map from tourism places along Lake Superior, Example Terry Fox Monument, Ashland ,Superior should have them and it is a super map. Maybe I'll bring some to inzane.

Nothing up there??!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Wellllll...there ain't much shoppin'...lessen yer lookin' fer a good pastie or smoked salmon or sum such. If you take the northern route do Munising and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=pictured+rocks+national+lakeshore&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=oZfwS4jsLZnMMfXyxN8P&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=5&ved=0CD8QsAQwBA

How much time do you have? Rtes 41 and 26 in the Keweenaw Peninsula are equal to any roads I've ridden for twisties, loop-de-loops, sweepers and stunning scenery.

Do a little research...there are over 120 waterfalls in the UP...most of them in the western end. I highly recommend Bond Falls just east of Paulding...north of Watersmeet.

Now if you're taking the southern route...Route 2 runs along the shore of Lake Michigan. Stop along the roadside and go take a dip in the Lake. Seriously...miles and miles of public sugar sand beach about 30 feet from the road: http://hunts-upguide.com/u_s__2_from_the_bridge_detail.html

Or take a side trip from Gulliver and visit Seul Choix Lighthouse: http://www.texasescapes.com/Ghosts/Lighthouse-Ghost-Keeper-of-Seul-Choix-Point.htm

Like a little Blackjack or some slots?  There's a casino in Manistique: http://www.casinocity.com/us/mi/manistique/kewadman/

And a lighthouse...

And not too far from there is  beautiful Kitchitikipee/Big Springs: http://www.michigan.org/Property/Detail.aspx?p=G15928

Ever see Escanaba in da Moonlight? yehhh....the restaurant in this very old and historic hotel is pretty cursed good. If you like quirky and old stay for a night: http://www.tripadvisor.com/LocationPhotos-g42185-d658101-House_of_Ludington-Escanaba_Michigan.html#16894190

The UP is a jewel. Hope you enjoy your trip and don't be afraid to take a side jaunt if you have the time. Smiley

EDIT:  There are plenty of small towns all over the UP with gas stations and little restaurants. The only place you may have to worrry about gas is in the far western area around the Porcupine Mountains.  There is a nice hotel in Silver City but no gas station...the nearest is 7 miles away in White Pines...or fill up in Ontonagon. Just a little planning is required there but otherwise, gas, food and lodging isn't a problem..

There's tons in the UP! I was referring to the trip between Green Bay and Eau Claire. MP, Alph, and I are going to be making the trip around Superior (through Canada) on the way to InZane. I'll be coming back through the UP most likely. Looking forward to it!

If you like waterfalls, there are tons of them up there.  Many are pretty cool.  Head up to Copper Harbor.  Very interesting area.  There is so much to see, I doubt you could hit it all.
