I recently joined the Lincoln Highway Association.  The old highway runs through New Haven.  I've always enjoyed riding it from New Haven to the Ohio line.  See the picture.

The Lincoln Highway never got the press that Route 66 got but it was started in 1915 as a private enterprise.  The road started at Time Corners in New York City and went to San Francisco, Ca.
Very interesting!  I've just seen a copy of an old post card of two young men that walked from Ft. Wayne, Indiana to San Francisco on the Lincoln Highway in 1915.  One of the men was named Adowin Doenges.  Amazing!  There were only a few Doenges's in Ft. Wayne at the time (not many today either) so he had to be related to my family.  My dad and mom must've known him.  I'm going to check the family tree.

I find this road interesting.  Maybe sometime, we could plan a VRCC event around this piece of history.

The history of this road is exciting.

Here is a pic of our Valk IS in front of the Mount Washington Tavern, which is on the highway.

Fort Necessity is just off of the  highway.

It looks as if Fort Wayne is going to be hosting The Lincoln Highway Association this summer.  Here is their link for info.

Sorry, I meant Times Square in NYC.  We have a Times Corners in ft. wayne.

Russ, the annual meeting is in South Bend this year, about 90 miles from Ft. Wayne.  Maybe Ft. Wayne is having a go at something too.

I heard about that neat special Paul.  I didn't see it though.

Another interesting item, sort of.  The Wayne Motel, just down the way from me. is original from that era.  Unfortunately, it now seems to have the reputation of being a hangout for drug dealers from Detroit.  If you ever look up that list of Mom and Pop motels to stay at cheap in New Haven, you might not want to stay at the Wayne.  Sad . What a waste of a good name Wink Wink

Would this be the same Old Lincoln Highway that comes thru Philadelphia Pa.? Damm I have lived just a few miles from it and never knew it went all the way to the coast.  The locals here call it the Lancaster highway, cause it takes you out to Lancaster county.

I had never heard of it before. I am familiar with Route 66 of course. And I have ridden Hwy 1 from Key West to DC in pieces. I haven't made it all in one go, and I haven't went from DC to NY city on it. But it is a road that I'm fascinated with. Although I don't think that it is as scenic for most of the trip as your road looks Wayne.

That is what I like about this site. Finding new roads and history that I didn't know existed.

Gilligan,

Do you have a flash function on your camera which isn't full flash but could fill in some of the shadows like in the 2 photos you've posted.

That way your photos would be a lot clearer. It's always difficult when the darker subject is against a brighter background to get detail in the subject. Of course you could just expose for the subject but that takes too much fooling around and can lead to washed out detail int he background.

In the old days, Hwy 30 through Iowa was the Lincoln Highway......

It is about 32 miles NOrth of Des Moines and you can travel pretty much all the way across Iowa on the old road........

Mine has full flash and "soft" flash. I use the soft to fill in some of the shadows.

With a 35mm it is difficult unless you expose for the subject.

Great idea.  I love the old US highways.  I've ridden the Lincoln highway from Philly to the Indiana line (always got off at Vanwert OH on to 224 to continue west 'cause I didn't want to go to Chicago on 30).  I've also spent a fair amount of time traveling the old Washington Pike (US 40), and on US 50 from near Leesburg VA to well into Utah.

For those coming to Gettysburg for the Blue & Grey Ride. If your coming from the west (northwest) you can pick up the Lincoln Highway (US 30) out of Breezewood, PA. From Breezewood to Gettysburg/Chambersburg, takes you up over two mountains... really great ride in!

We are coming in from NE Ohio, and in looking at the map, depending on time, might just ride US 30 all the way out.

The Lincoln Highway is about 15 miles north of where I live here in Iowa. It runs right through Jefferson, IA which is the county seat of Greene County. It also happens to be where I was born so I guess people associate it more with that than the highway 2funny uglystupid2.... Ok, maybe not! They have a nice little museum there with some of the old highway posts and a bunch of original Burma Shave signs. Those that attended the Iowa Ride In last year got to ride a short section of it. One of these days I'd like to ride it from Jefferson to one of the coasts and then come back and run it the other way... someday! It does seem to be one of the less publicised pieces of history if you don't live near it. CW McCall even did a song about called Old 30... lyrics:

She was mud and sand and concrete
Mixed with water made a tears
From the rivers runnin down the great divide
She was three thousand miles
Of rockin, rollin highway
A million memories long and two lanes wide
Far across the wide missouri
To the ol wyomin line
From the jersey shore to san francisco bay
She was known to all the truckers
As the mighty lincoln highway
But to me, shes still old 30 all the way
Now the interstate goes screamin through the backyard of her life
But it just dont send those shivers down my spine
So before I take that exit
To the highway in the sky
Im gonna take old 30 one more time
She was radiators boilin
In the burnin summer sun
And a blizzard blowin wild across the plains
She was tumbleweeds a-rollin
In the gentle winds of fall
And the lights of old grand island in the rain
She was mud and sand and concrete
Mixed with water made a tears
From the rivers runnin down the great divide
She was three thousand miles
Of rockin, rollin highway
A million memories long and two lanes wide
Now the interstate goes screamin through the backyard of her life
But it just dont send those shivers down my spine
So before I take that exit
To the highway in the sky
Im gonna take old 30 one more time
One more time

Its in Pennsylvania on US 30 (duh) between US 219 and Stoystown.   Kirk, Cheryl and I had just left the Thunder in the Valley rally in Johnstown and were en route to the Flt 93 Memorial when we came across this beauty.

What is the avg speed from Ligonier to Gettysburg on Hwy 30? Looks like if I sneak down from IUP this summer to make the Gettysburg ride then Hwy 30 is a good route to try.

On that stretch you could probably average  45-50.  Its twisty roads up and down the hills with the occasional small town, but a beautiful ride.  From Gettsyburg east, its slower due to the traffic.
