Yep... at first I though it was clearing, but after a few hundred miles with the wife AND pulling a trailer, it started to rub. 

It was VERY light though (no wear... just a clean stripe on the tire). 

I chopped out the cage... no problems since. 

I can't even tell where it was rubbing any more... tire has gotten some fresh road grime since then.   cooldude

After mounting a GTT on my '98 "Tourstate", I thought it was clear.  Only when 2 up it would rub on the right side in a dip.  That made a rub mark all the way around, still visible a year and 11000 miles later!  Did the nut cage on both sides, even though no indication of wear on the left, but at least no more rubber smells!

I did BOTH of them on my standard.  Without questioning the whole thing.

I did not do it on the IS.  It was OK for just me... but when I added the SO I got rubber smell.   I did it real quick last night and it's better now.
