I've found HD Sportster for my wife (good bike, good $$). unfortunately it was abandoned several years back in a storage facility so it looks like retitling it could be difficult.

Have any of you guys / girls got any experience with things like this?

I'd rather not pass on this deal but may have to.

Here are what I see as options
1. I've been told Wisconsin requires a surety bond for 3-5 years before they will release the title, but I'm not sure my wife will want to keep something like this for that long. She's going to want to upgrade

2. buy a frame with a title and swap everything over

3. use one of these places, http://www.getnewtitle.com/how-it-works.html or http://www.its-titles.com/lost_vehicle_title.html who claim to be able to acquire titles in a couple of months (cost could be $100-500)

Again, just looking for some advice from those who have had similar experiences

Thanks

Alph (a fellow Wisconsinsite) looked into this for a scooter he was trying to title. Apparently WI is one of the toughest in the nation. He came across some good ideas. Hopefully he'll see this...

I used to buy cars and bikes in Hawaii when I was in the navy A LOT.  I also had buddies with the base police.  When vehicles got abandoned on the base... it happened a lot, there was a salvage company that paid to come take them.  My buddies at the base police would tell me in advance and I'd secure them, prior to their salvage.  The base police guys said they thought the salvage guys were assholes, and they didn't like them profiting from the situation.

The point of the story... I'd figure out who the last registered owner was, and then pay them, usually $100, to get me a duplicate title.  It never failed to work.  I did it 6 or 8 times.  $50 up front, and $50 more when they sent me the title.  This should be a lot easier in the internet age we have today.  That's how I would approach it.

You can also file a mechanics lien. (I think)

Jabba,
You make some great points. Thank you for the advice

Contacting previous owner. Evidently several people have tried that. And I suspect the previous owner is nowhere near me so I’d have to do it all over mail – IF that person would respond.

Mechanic’s lien eh? I could ask around

Anyone know a mechanic in Madison?...

the garage or storage space should be able to ask for something comperable to a mechanic's lein that claims ownership as a result of unpaid bills or abandonment. It depends on the area. I'd try paying them a few bucks to do the paperwork.

In the NC the paperwork isn't hard, but does take a little time.

I have a buddy that drives a wrecker. He picks up abandoned bikes all the time, but the garage owner won't spend the afternoon doing paperwork for a dozen bikes at a pop so they're crushed when no one picks them up. That's crazy to me! I'd be running a used bike lot somewhere around town  Cool

Here in Iowa, we put up a surety bond, contact the DMV, they come out and inspect it, if it passes, they issue us a title that cancels any old ones that should surface.......

I'll ask my son at noon how it is done actually.  He is the one who does all of them.   He just titled 2 Benelli's he salvaged and is parting them together off the internet.    One of the Bennelli's was a frame only, it now is rideable, not titled yet, but we can and do ride it around the lot.

His little Aramachi (Italian HD), complete bike, but no run, was titled this way..

I sent you a PM to call me....

NO volunteer, but I can tell you how to get a title......

IF you are buying the bike from the storage unit.....

DO NOT USE THE WORD ABANDONED.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Hmmm... that makes me think about my step moms Sporty. She had one 10-15 yrs ago when she rode with the Outlaws.  Some stuff was going on and she gave it to a guy to keep for her till the stuff blew over. Never saw the guy or bike again. I think she still has the title to.  Undecided

I bought a scooter from a guy in Minneapolis.  He was able to get a license plate and get it registered, but never got a title.  Here in Wisconsin you need to have the other states title to get it transferred into your name.  Since it was sold in Minnesota, and had been registered in Minnesota, there is a title required.  Well, the state of Wisconsin will not let me title it unless I get the Minnesota title or any other states title, which doesn't exist.  So, what I’ve been told to do is to go to Arizona and get it titled.  I’ve heard that Arizona only requires an address.  I’ve got my mother, and a brother that live in chandler, so I could use their address, then get the Arizona title, bring it to Wisconsin, and I’ll be set.

I wish you the best of luck, but here in Eau Claire, the DMV lady I’ve always dealt with doesn’t seem to know crap.

You'd think somewhere they'd have a big book with pictures of titles. I once handed a GA title to the NC DMV lady to which she huffed, "I'll have to have the title." It took me a while to convince her because of the vehicles age that was the title. I believe that was the trip where she made me write on a piece of notebook paper that I had a title, which she notarized, I paid her a cash notary fee, and then watched her throw the paper away. DMVs can get fun. Enjoy.
