The dogs, Patches and Dixie were raising he?? about 11:45. I had just sat down to check the board when they sounded the alarm. I grabed my SA XD40 Sub-compact and a flashlight and out the door. I got to the pen and let Patches out. Dixie will hunt but gets in the way and hates gun fire.
Patches alerted pretty quick and the dillo took off. It dove under the rose bush, got flushed and out around the pecan tree, then to the Crape Myrtle out by the carport. Then back to the rose bushes. I heard it frantically diging so I called Patches back to heel. I got down on my left knee so I could get a look and sure nuf, there he was, just a diggin, trying to make an escape tunnel. Got a bead on him and let loose. First shot was a little akward, think I missed so fired round 2. Got him. Patches went after him as he was scrambling to get the heck out of there. I jumped up on the porch, shined the light down on him and put him out of his misery.

I hope I haven't ruined a perfectly good quail dog. She's hooked on dillo hunting now. Almost as much fun as coon huntin and don't have to leave the yard.

Please excuse my ignorance, we don't have armored rats in Indyanner.

How destructive are the armadillo's?  Are they a bad problem?  Are they agressive?  Just curious.

PS: That looks like one happy dog!  Wink

Yeah, I have shot a whole pile of them. There are dillio skulls laying all over the place.

If that is blood I see splashed on your siding I'd get it off asap, it leaves a mark, Yes that is the voice of experience... tickedoff

They are not aggressive. But they are destructive. One dillio can dig hundreds of ankle breaking holes in your lawn in a single night, or root up your flowers and shrubs. Our yard looked like a mine field from dillio diggin.

In Florida, if you catch one it is illegal to release it, They are not native to the US, it must be euthanized.

Our equal to that is the mole here in Indianner.  One mole, although much smaller than a dillo,  can destroy your nice grassy yard overnight by digging long crooked tunnels just below the surface.  That's bad enough but when they come up to look around is even worse.   Hard to catch or shoot.

Agree on the mole problem, solo1!!!!

Had one last year that wreaked havoc and our dogs went nuts trying to dig the bastage up.  All by our front porch.  Had been trying for 3 seasons to get it looking better, hard to get the grass to grow by the driveway.  Grrrr.

Those suckers are strong for their size! I've grown up in Florida-I remember grabbing one by his tail when I was five or six and being dragged around the campground.

Last one of those SOB's I got was on the Valkyrie in 1998.....

Was just outside of a town in Mississippi and one run across the road in front of me........   Then stopped dead in his tracks and we went thump thump and he was still rolling and sliding as I went on down the road.

Figured he lived through it.   I know the axle on the trailer had blood on it.   As JeffK says, it don't wash off too good.......

If you're going to be doing more night sniping, I'd suggest a Crimson Trace laser sight

we got rabits Angry

hate rabits!  they'll eat all my flowers in the fall, and they don't eat the cheap ones either!!  i've got twenty rose bushes, and they'll eat the rose buds that are low enough.  my neighbor goes out and leaves four brush piles all over his vacant lot, behind ours, just so that the rabits will have a safe place to multiply in.

i'll pop them off with a pellet gun 'cause it's illegal to shoot a 22cal. rifle in city limits, also, the pellet gun doesn't alert the rabit loving neighbor of mine!

i know, i should just get a dog.

Get you some Agulia brand .22 super colibri ammo.  It is a primer only load which makes no more noise than a pellet gun.  It won't cycle a semi auto but if you have a single shot, lever or pump it works great.  I take care of all the rabbits and other critters and no one in the neighborhood is the wiser.

Been using the Aguilla Super Colibri in a Ruger 10/22 for years.  Has to be single loaded to the chamber with needlenose pliers as it will not cycle the action.

It is subsonic and quieter than both my pellet rifles (pump .177 and spring piston .22).  It is also dirty ammo, but it gets the job done and quietly.

Personally I enjoy the noise. I'm thinking it keeps the locals honest. With all the night time gun fire in my backyard it may make them think twice about sneaking around at night. cooldude

When I think of armadillos I think of this song...
Gary P Nunn w/ Jerry Jeff Walker - London Homesick Bluespowered by Aeva

FYI, I built the background set you see in the video and ended up being the assistant director for three seasons on this show...had no idea this stuff was still floating around in video cyber space!

Dang, those look nice but more than half what the gun cost. I think I'll rely on my Brinkman for now.

Me to on the noise, however, Chris was asleep upstairs directly above the gunfire and didn't budge. Don't think the neighbors noticed either. I'll use the shotgun loaded with magnum turkey load next time. Makes a big boom.

I've seen 'em on the net for $180 incl. shipping. Paid $185 for mine as I recall. Worth every penny in dark/low-light situations.

Bagged another dillo last night. Oddly though something is dragging the bleached out dillo housings back into my yard. I pitch the hollow shells into the woods after the buzzards hollow them out, and now something is dragging the sun bleached shells back onto the lawn?  tickedoff

Okay Jeff, or should I call you Sheeve?  angel  I thought about making helmets out of the shells and wearing em into Walmart. You know they zap you when you walk in. Been there a few time with Anita and gonna get one or two items, $15. max and leave with $100 + everytime. I know they zap us causing to even forget what we went in for. But according to Sheeve we need a dillo helmet.
