I'm planning on going out to Western Montana end of July and was wondering if anyone had some input on which way is best to go on Going-To-Sun Highway (Glacier Nat'l Park)  .... east to west -or- west to east ??  I recall someone telling me that going one direction was better because you were on the inside lane most of the time but can't remember which way it was.

I was there last summer. Entered by St Mary on the east side. The going to the sun highway is amazing. several places to pull over . The wind almost blew me off the road on the way there, the highest gusts I've ever riden in coming around the mountains.  I don;t think there's a lot of loging check with the park service to see if the road is open

How scary and creepy is it to drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road?
The Going-to-the Sun Road takes you through some of the most spectacular scenery in the park. Because portions of the road hug the mountainside, there are a few tight curves, but thousands of vehicles have safely made the journey from one side of the park to the other. Heading east toward Logan Pass and St. Mary from the West Entrance, passengers on the passenger side of the vehicle will be able to look over the edge of the road in a few spots. Follow the speed limit, drive carefully, and enjoy the majesty this road has to offer.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

My HD is headed there near the end of July. If you see a blue Electra glide with Indiana vanity plates, it'll be him.

I prefer east to west on my Valk. Keeps you on the inside of the road. If you feel the need to look over the edge, stop at a pull out and walk over.  uglystupid2 Your timing weather wise is about as good as any, but it could still be cold up there. If you call the park right before you leave they will update you on any construction etc.. If you are doing more travel in this part of the country, PM me and I'll give you the good roads to ride.

Good info .... exactly what I was looking for !! - yup, East to West option sounds like a plan, keep the wife happy and better suits my tentative route. Riding the Rocky's is my passion and have been thru several western states and have learned early on to respect them.  Keep the eyes on the road (best you can) and pull over for pictures. I would prefer to go later in August thru Glacier NP but other plans say otherwise.

Another awesome road is the Beartooth Pass. Did that once in Mid August and there were snowflakes in the air up at the pass .... brrrrr

Hey Fudgie - I'll keep an eye out for the blue EG, I'll be riding my Black & Silver Valk pulling a metallic red trailer - Minnesota plates. We'll be leaving home the 25th or 26th.

Anyway, thanks for the great info - now I know what to expect.

winemkr - you have a PM

Enjoy!!  I have been both directions and no matter what there is great views, make sure you have your camera always ready. Not only for wildlife but for the cloud formations and the change in colors of the water and falls...It is an awsome trip.  Oh and if your in Hungry Horse Montana, you have to have some of the Huckleberry ice cream...yummm..

Glacier Nat'l is spectacular, but Canada is unbelievable. Get up to Bannf and Lake Louise. The lakes are turquois in color because of the glacier run off.

You are so close at that point, you have to see it.
It is truly a must see. Go up on one road and return on another.
