Hello! I have been lurking for a while and enjoying the board. I got my Standard last July and have been really enjoying getting to know the bike. I am planning a ride on the BRP this July and would appreciate any and all advice on side trips. I'll be riding the full length from Cherokee north and back. I rode it last year and know that I missed a lot and I'm hoping ya'll could point me in the right direction(s). Thanks and ride safe.

Almost any road off the Blue Ridge has some adventure, history, beauty, waterfalls, sights, etc. Just pick a road and ride. And welcome aboard. Curious too, where at in Alabama? I'm in SE bamy near Dothan.

Alt 226 at Little Switzerland. Run south to north up hill. Beware, this road does bite the unwary.

+1 to Jess. When I did the SD/BRP a few years ago they had just done a section of the SD in chip & seal. The chips stuck to the rear tire and when flung off they put nicks in my exhaust covers down to the base metal  . |

Don't take the marked detour near Asheville, NC. Take Hwy 151. That was a neat road that I took off the parkway.

ya gotta do the Wheels Thru Time museum in Maggie Valley. if its open went there and would go back. really great place to view some history. |

Thanks. I'm just outside of Prattville. Of course I know where Valley is! The home of Dale's Den! I made the trip last year on the Guzzi but I just rode straight up through the BRP and Skyline Drive and back. I won't be riding Skyline again this year so I'm looking for some side trips.

When I did it a few years back, they weren't kidding about the speed limits. Also watch the fuel, back then, no stations on the parkway and we had to go hunting for one.

I ride the BRP a lot and this is the best advice you've received yet. If you get a BRP map it may show gas at certain points on the parkway but they all quit selling gas a couple years ago. How far off the BRP you wanna go for a side trip ? |

If you're an Andy Griffith fan, take hwy 89 to Mt. Airy, NC. Andy's home town and the town Mayberry was based on. There's an Andy Griffith museum, a replica of the Mayberry jail and the Snappy diner. At the northern end go into Charlottesville, spend the night and the next day tour Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson. The man was an inventor as well as a politician. In Asheville, NC you can tour the Biltmore House. Take hwy 25 into Biltomore. If I can remember to dig out a BRP map tomorrow I'll give you mileposts for these places. There's many more but I need the map to jog my memory. I recommend you stop at the first visitor's center or store located on the BRP and get map. I think they are still free. If you're into good MC roads you've been told of the best ones that have parkway access. |

Let me know when you plan to do the Virginia section and I'll be glad to play tour guide if you like. There are many GREAT side trips. It just depends on your schedule, how far from the Parkway that you want to stray etc. Shoot me an email with your cell # a few days before you plan to be in the area and I'll give you a call and we can make plans.  |
