well i failed my stat inspection for my turn signals.  I had a bad wire that was causing everything to blink and act all screwy.  I had paid a shop a while ago to fix it but they just messed with the wiring and the turn signals worked fine as along as you did not apply the breaks.  I fixed it but had to mess a lot with the wiring to the rear to undo what the shop had done.  it is fixed ow.  Since i had it all broken down i decided to install a GPS on my valk.  I used the axillary wires under the right panel and wired it up.  It works fine and i did not have to pull the tank or really mess with anything electrical besides whats under the right panel.  After completing these two jobs i took it for a ride to look at the pretty moving GPS screen.
I then noticed that the entire tach cluster is dead.  NO LED for kick stand, oil or temp.  Tach does not move.  I also noticed that my neutral light now does not work.  It starts and runs fine.  I am sure i did this but i can not figure out anything they have in common.  I pulled the fuse on the GPS and it makes no difference.  What am i missing????
Thanks

ok i found it.  It turns out it was a fuse.  Not really what the fuse is labeled as nor does the book tell me to check that fuse in trouble shooting that problem.  Really annoying.  The only rear light that was out was my license plate light.  oh well.  Thanks all. (i found the answer with a forum search.)

I just got here tonight -- been working on some electrical stuff on the 99 Standard... I noticed that there's a fuse for the instrument cluster (or something like that. It made sense when I read it ???  uglystupid2 )

I was gonna tell you about it, but it looks like I'm too late. Glad ya found it!

i just really wish the fuse was labeled as instruments or something.  I think it is labeled "tail light."  I do not know about you but when i you say tail light i am thinking break light.  It apparently means the license plate light.  It does not mention anything about the instruments.  I read on here it is some sort of safety feature because you woudl never notice your license plate light going out and thus they shut down your tach and neutral light so you will notice.  I just wish the tear down manual woudl have mentioned it.  On the "my tach ain't working" section, it tells you to break down the headlight and check the harness.  It never mentions a fuse related to it.

Where is the fuse, Lost Valk?  In the fuse holder, or somewhere else?

yeah it is in the standard fuse holder.  Second from the top.  A 10a minifuse. It is labeled at "tail meter"
It means a lot more crap that that!!!!!

I may be giving too much credit to Mother Honda, but I think think the tach is wired to the tail light circuit so you are alerted when your light is out.

It's quite simple really.  All the low current stuff that is always on with the key (except accessory terminals) is on one fuse, labelled "TAIL ยท METER".

I think it is wired that way to let you know that your tailights are out if you tach and idiot lights don't work. JMHO
