I have ran a car tire for over 5 years now.  I recently moved to NC.  I passed my first inspection as the people said it was about tread not type.  I moved again to another section of NC and a honda dealer failed me because i had a car tire and that was unsafe.  Well they did not fail me they just told me they would not inspect it as it would obviously fail.  I had to drive another 30 miles to another honda dealer who said the car tire was no problem (but did fail me for other reasons uglystupid2)

Anyone else had problems like this?  I know it is hit or miss finding shops that will put the tire on for me, but i am always able to find one where ever i am.

I have NEVER heard of that.  I would have asked him to show me in the STATE REGS where it is not legal.

I bet if you had him inspect it, he would have passed it, because there is no reason to fail it. He was just trying to drum up some business.  I would not trust that shop to do ANYTHING on my bike!

If it was me, I would report him!

It's DOT approved for highway use. There is no "motorcycle" DOT tire classification.

i asked what regulation or anything that says it is not ok.  He said it was unsafe and thus fails a inspection designed for safety.  He did not inspect it and thus he did not fail it for me to complain.  Nor did they charge me because he stated this on the walk around.  It is a nice way to weed out a shop i am not going to deal with but it sure did piss me off at the time.  No reason for starting fights because if he wants to be a dick he could fail my exhaust as it is aftermarket.
The shop i did end up going to still said it was unsafe but not against any rules or against the inspection.  I have a feeling i am going to have trouble finding someone to replace this tire the next time.

oh yeah btw i was pretty pissed at the time and jumped the guy.  I asked him about the spyders and all the bosshoss's that have care tires.  I asked him if the spyder was not considered a motorcycle?  He said it is not designed to lean and thus a car tire was safe and mine was not.

Lost, what part of NC did ya move to?  If your anywhere near Jonesville, NC there is a custom bike shop there that builds choppers etc, and they will inspect it for ya.  They did mine.  Its called Grandeur Manufacturing.

I take mine to a automotive lube place, Quick Lube I think.  They don't ask me any questions and only want to hear the horn and see the bright and dim headlight settings....

RUN THIS BY THE DOT PEOPLE WHO LICENSE THIS GUY TO DO VEHICLE INSPECTIONS AND GET PAID FOR IT.    Don't file any charges, just ask to see the rule where this is a NO NO.    If they say there is none, then tell them who you are questioning.    Sure hope ya had a witness with ya.   IF not, don't bother the last portion of this post.

Do what RJ says. I would go to the state.  He is unethical.  You causght it, but help a fellow rider out who may not know better.

+1 Tundra on "What is an inspection?",  Oh yeah, that is what the responsible party, ie ME, does before every ride.  Not what some PAID state does once a year to fill their coffers!

+1 North Dakota!

« Reply #12 on: June 04, 2010, 05:13:32 AM »

Each State is different, and I don't know what NC requires, but I would NEVER EVER go to a dealer for any vehicle inspection.  My local gas station guys pass cars and bikes with no significant inspection.... horn and lights on the car, no inspection of any kind on the bikes.... they don't work on bikes and know nothing about them.  After all, in VA inspections are about taxes not safety.

Our local area metric dealers are famous for failing a whole range of technical problems, lights, lenses, reflectors, tread depth, horn vol, on and on.  If you go to a dealer you are asking for trouble.

sludge: i moved to asheveille NC.  Have not looked to she how close i am to that show you mentioned.

Brad: I got failed for my turn signals.  I have problems with the wire harness to the rear lights.  They keep trying to slide out the back of the harness  Both turn signals kind of work fine but when you have the turn signals on and break, it shorts out the turn signal and everything blinks.  If anyone ever asked i said it did it for safety reasons so people would notice me. (cuss i was to lazy to fix).  I got called out on it and he said i needed to fix it.  (It is not a bad thing, i fixed it and messed with the right rear fender nut to try to cut back on the rubbing the car tire.  FYI each bike is diff, i use the "it will fit without fender nut mod" size.  I have removed the nut cage a long time ago and it still rubs

All others: here in NC i have never ran into an inspection shop that does cars and motorcycles.  Even the large private motorcycle shops do not do inspections.  It is only dealers that i have seen.  Anyone in NC seen otherwise?  That is how i get my car done all the time at a lube place.  No hassel.

Take it to the NC State Inspection Station and you won't have any problems.  Sounds like your Honda Dealer has some preconcieved notions not supported by the regulations.   uglystupid2

Sometimes it's better to not ask questions if you might not like the answer. Our state (at least until November) is currently run by a bunch of nannystate busy bodies. If word gets back from DOT to the legislature, they'll pass a law banning car tires on motorcycles. It would be just one more reason for state police to pull over bikers without probable cause. Find someone to inspect who doesn't care about the car tire and then shut up about it.

In my case I avoid the Ducati dealer where I sticker the rest of my bikes. If they saw a car tire they'd spit up their glass of vino. I instead go to a used car lot that inspects cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles... they just want the money.

That's true anywhere there's a safety inspection. And when times are hard (for the dealers) they fail a lot of stuff, like lower A-arm bushings, that are perfectly safe.  tickedoff

Out here in the Southwest, we only inspect for emissions. Motorcycles are tested at idle and not at running speeds. Cars are put on rollers and run up and down the speed range. Several years ago, a bike fell over on the rollers and the state had to fix it. After that, bikes don't run on the rollers, hence the idle only test. Maricopa County put this in place to keep federal highway money coming in due to air pollution. No test is given for safety.

In NC most car dealers and repair shops don,t do motorcycles.  Ellenburgs garage on hwy 221 north in Rutherfordton, NC he does both cars and vehicles.  The motorcycle inspection is different from car inspection. Also Honda shop in Forest City, and Yamaha shop in Rutherfordton do inspections.
