Effective 03-13-09, the DOD rescinded it's decades old policy of selling the military's surplus brass for remanufacture. It now has to be 'mutilated" (their word) by the buyer so that it cannot be reloaded, so it's now being sold as scrap at approx. 80% less value as it had as reloadable brass. With one stroke of his pen, Obama put a stranglehold on most all 223, 308, 9MM, and 50BMG brass & remanufactured ammo available to civilians and LE. They virtually put the 5th largest American ammo manufacturer out of business overnight (they had to cancel all pending civilian & LE orders and lay off 50% of their work force). Available ammo from places like Black Hills & Ultramax will dry up fast. The priority order is Military, LE, then civilians last. The next step I anticipate is banning all imported ammo. That will cut off stuff like Wolf Ammo. AG Holder has all ready announced his intent to ban most hunting type bullets as "armor piercing"... Even if they don't raise the fed tax on ammo 400%-500% as they have stated is intended, I anticipate 223 ammo to rise in prices dramatically. I would not be surprised to see it at $100 a box of 20 by the end of the year...

+ + = If it's caliber you're concerned about, get hold of a DPMS LR-series rifle and either buy or build an LR243 or LR260 upper for it. Neither caliber is military-spec and brass is VERY available...as are bullets. Cases can also be made from other calibers by full-length die resizing, fire-forming and trimming...

Followup:
"Responding to two Democratic senators representing outraged private gun owners, the Department of Defense announced last night it has scrapped a new policy..."
Democrats? Standing up for the rights of gun owners?
Say it ain't so!
They remember what happened to their seats in '96 after many voted for the AWB of '94. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has also gone on record as stating that we as a country do NOT need more anti-gun laws; instead, enhanced enforcement of those currently on the books...

Nancy Pelosi recently said, Democrats will wait and revisit the guns "when the issue is ripe."

Yeah, they'll definitely revisit the "guns" when some nut kills. Strike while the iron is hot, pass those gun laws.
Dems are opportunists that like to whip people into a frenzy to draw attention away from themselves, witness the AIG debacle with the resultant 90% tax passed by the House, most certainly unconstitutional.

Yep. It’s like they thought Orwell’s book 1984 was a “guide to better government”. Now the news media will play up every shooting by a nut case which will encourage more nut cases to do the same. Then they’ll say there is a “epidemic” (which they intentionally helped cause) and the liberal press will call for more gun control laws. Which of course will do nothing to stop crime so they’ll say they need still more gun control laws.

Date of publication the article, quoted from within: June 23, 2003 Pelosi made the comments to which I'm referring in late February of this year. I'm definitely no fan of hers, but that article and its summarization of the current Democratic mindset - especially Speaker Pelosi's - is way out of date. Thus, it's pretty far out of context as well. A few Chicagoans - Holder readily comes to mind, as does the idiot who keeps reintroducing HR45; the "Blair Holt Firearms Act" - are far more worrisome than Pelosi. Commenting that existing laws should be enforced to their fullest extent before new gun-control measures are enacted, Pelosi remarked earlier this month that she would seek dismissal of HR45 and similar bills should they be introduced to Committee...
