Joe's 03 std is still getting 20 mpg.  We have changed petcock, vaccuum lines, air filter, synched the carbs. new spark plugs.  It all started when we put the Cobra's on his bike and Al Lambs rejetted the carbs with Cobra needles.  Could it be that we need to go back to stock needles in the carbs?  I hate when you follow the insistance of a stealership and things turn out worse.  Any ideas would be appreciated. Doc, I didn't realize you replaced the needles.  Almost any tuning (not including synch work) you do to the Valk carbs lowers the mileage and I think if you search for discussion about the needles, you'll find many comments about mileage going down.  I can't recall anyone talking about any drop as drastic as you're talking about, though.  You're talking about at least 10-15 mpg off average Valk mileage.

The good news is that since he is running 6 - 6 pipes, you could have someone with a dyno and sniffer tube check the mixture accurately.  In fact, you could also invest in your own tuning sniffer if you wanted to in order to check it out.  That would allow you to work with facts in hand.

Just a thought.

Sounds like some good suggestions all the way around. I would just like to chime in and save anyone the ordeal of re-jetting for Cobra 6 into 6 plumbing. I ran them for about 40K miles with stock carbs and could get as much as 42 mpg if I kept the revs around 3K. 34-36 mpg was more likely and cruising at 85mph would put the average down to around 28-30 mpg.

The happiest of endings was when I went back to stock pipes and picked up the extra horses. Very obvious seat of the pants difference. I remember it being a reported 8 horses increase on a dyno. ~Jeff

Grin Hey Brother Jeff , I concer with what you said because on my Fat Lady I have never altered the  jetting, I just stayed stock running a coffee and milk color on the plugs and making sure  the carbs are synced , and I'm getting 40 mpg AS LONG AS I STAY CRUISING AT 3,000 rpm's and keep my foot out of it ... and thats when I have Mrs Geezer with me  crazy2 and I can't help thinking that switching over to the six degree trig wheel has helped a bit also cooldude

The biggest question is where are the needles set at ? Their are 5 settings. The higher the c-clip the leaner it runs. Sounds like the dealer set them at the lowest. I run 112.5 jets instead of the stock 100's with cobra needles and 6 into 6 and get around 36 mpg.

Larry, make sure Joe's air box boots to the carbs are tight.  I had one that wasn't sealed and my mileage was awful.  I found the boot loose and got it seated properly and my mileage went back up to where it was supposed to be; maybe the dealer didn't get one on correctly.

Easy enough to check.

Dealer would not do anything with the airbox or boots to change the needles !

They disconnected my battery to install a tire so there's no telling what they are (in)capable of doing.

vaccuum lines,

Someone had the airbox off, but I'll leave this discussion to the "experts".

Good calls, Chuck.  We had the airbox open and off at the February or March wrench party when we replaced the air filter element and replaced vacuum lines and vacuum plugs.  I'd double check the boots - it's easy.

Doc, did you get the phone message I left you this a.m.?

Already checked the boots cause we did have the airbox off when we changed the lines.  Boots are OK.  Got the message.  Haven't had a chance to call. Thanks for the help. L

I called Howie.  He's on the road calling on customers, but has both numbers, and will be in touch.
