The other day it was windy here, my wife was out with my youngest son, and a guest of wind caught my sons door on the car and dinged the vehicle next to it, and she did the right thing, she left her name and number. It was a 1998 ford f150, so the guy calls today and says he has quotes for $250 to $300. I just saw the truck and it has more dings than I could count...so wjay would you do???

Offer the guy a $100 or you want to talk to a judge. You can not be responsible for an act of God. IE the wind causing the door to open into his truck.

First, explain to your wife that she needs to assess the condition of car before leaving a note.  Second, give him a six-pack and tell him to have a nice day.

He probably cannot even pick out which ding is which.

Most states consider parking lots private property and on private property it is 100% up to the parties involved and their insurance companies. NO POLICE INVOLVEMENT !   Check your state law.  You can probably offer him less than his deductible would cost him (or he will pay his ins. the deductible to fight it out with your ins company) otherwise ask him to point out the the 1 ding that you are responsible for..take a picture, have him circle it and sign the pic (or he can just get bent and tell him to sue you! ) Make sure you get the picture either way.   If you give him your insurance info., they will give him a thousand or 2 thousand dollars to shut him up so that they dont have to pay a lawyer. Then it's all between you and your ins. Co. .

I agree with Roadkill, he's going to pocket the money; whatever he gets! Give him two sixpacks and ask him for a beer!  2funny

Sometimes it just doesn't pay to be honest... But I always get to feel better for being that way.

The issue for me is Not that I had to pay for my actions...But that every one else gets penalized and the dishonest guy comes out ahead. Insurance has it's pro's and con's, but I have to agree with it being mandatory.

If a couple hundred keeps the insurance company out of it...no one else gets hurt. Damn it! I hate having to agree at this point!  Embarrassed there is a long story behind my contempt for that system..but HG has a  valid point and if you can squeeze the funds it is best for all .

Insurance isn't mandatory.  You can file a bond with your state, and get a waiver for liability insurance.  In Indiana it's $500K. (Last I knew)

I say gibe the guy the $200.  You'll sleep better at night.

For a door repaint that's not a bad price but find a dent doctor or a similar service. Its one of those that works the dents out without body work. It usually costs 50 to 100 dollars to remove the dents on a whole side of a car and as long as they are not to deep or on a seam it works good. I have had it done many times and they are great,if you cant find one ask a body shop for a number of one most use them. They are mobile so they will even go to the guys house. Now for a little personal comment I dont think the guy is really trying to rip you off but I know what you are talking about with all the dings on a older vehicle. If the thing with the dent guy doesn't work out I would offer him 150 cash and call it even. This is one of those situations that may go well beyond what it looks like on the surface. I dont mean in a bad way either just that take the time and look to all areas of the situation there may be more reason than just a dent as to why this guys life and yours came together.

I tell you what I would do; tell him to give you the truck and take to a "DENT DOC" or like and have the dent pulled out. That is if he can pick out the "dent". Most door dings can be pulled out for $75 bucks. No paint work at all. Or take a LOT of pictures of the Ford and tell him you will see him in Court !!  Evil

I'd give him the number of your insurance company, and notify them of the issue. That's what they are for.

offer him just less then his estimates, if he is going to pocket the $ he will take. I hate it when I screw up but when you do you have to pay the bill.

It's easy to "do the right thing" until there's a price tag attached.

By the same token, I don't think doing the right thing means letting someone hold you up.

I'd offer him what I would consider reasonably generous compensation.  If he insists on full repair tell him to bring you the repair bill after it's done and you'll reimburse him for your portion of the damage.

So here is what I did...

I asked him to go to one of my guys, and I would accept his proposal. I just got off the phone with my guy and he said the damage my wife's door did would buff out. So I offered to have his truck detailed and waxed by my guy. I am waiting to hear back...

Total detail and wax of his truck, $100...
