Hay every one, new valk rider here. I have a 97 standard(i will get a pic on my profile soon) that i got last spring. I have put about 2500mi on it since i got it. It has a k&n filter and it looks like the piglets are drilled and it has open tail pipes, the last 20in or so of the pipes are truck pipes.  my miliage is poor, if i ride nice, under 65 the best i have ever got is 27mpg, put if i crank it up and run 75+ it will get down to 22mpg. It also has a flat spot in the power from about 2500 to 3500 rpm.  I opend up a carb to see if any thing had bean done and there is 100 mains and 35 slows. the plugs are BLACK. i put a new fuel valve on last summer.  I have got a lot good info from this site and im shure my anser is out ther just havent found it.

Huummm, if you're accelerating normally[whatever that is] to 65 then there appears to be something wrong.. It should get much better fuel  mileage than that.. There shouldn't be a flat spot in it either.. Can you talk to the previous owner?? Maybe he can tell you if anything has been done to it.. You may want to check the setting of the pilots, I think 2.25 to 2.5 turns works best.. You could also remove the top covers and check the condition of the diaphrams and see if the needles have been changed or shimmed.. If the needles are OEM but have a shim under them, try removing them.. If they are aftermarkets, see where the clip is set.. Raise the clip one or two notches.. You could also check the easy stuff first, like the condition of the air filter..That really isn't that easy, it takes a while to get to the air filter..

Is the pre-filter on the K&N? Is it possibly over-oiled?

Another basic I didn't think about at first.. Where is the choke lever set and how well is it working.. Are the enrichment valves[choke's] operating correctly and not hanging-up in the rich position??

check the idle mixture screws and the needles. if after market needles the clip most likely needs to be raised, or if they are stock needles extra washers might have been installed to raise them. only one washer under the clip is stock.

so i pulled the needels and they are stock with 1 shim under them. the chokes are all free but i never have to use it even way up here in north dakota, starts right up cold. and the mix screws are all at 2 1/2 turns out.

Kind of sounds like someone might have taken a hand brass drill bit and walked it through the main jets to make them larger with a stock # on them.

We used to do that when I was drag racing in the way back when days, the ones where everything had to be stock if you were protested..

Just like we used to shave the block instead of the heads.

Got that hint from Junior Johnson, he was a good ole boy....   LOL..

RJ makes a good point, that could have happened.. It was common practice in the olden days.. I was just with Junior a couple weeks ago, brought home some of his famous brew.. That monster should get better mileage..

It seems pretty obvious to me that 2-1/2 turns on the idle screws is too much for your bike at the elevation you are at!

Additionally the black plugs and not having to use the choke to start a cold motor is confirmation that you are running a too rich motor.

I think at sea level the recommendation is around 1-3/4 turns for the screws so you can judge accordingly.

I agree if that everything seems to check out OK then I'd close the pilots to 1.75- 2.0 turns and see how that works.. The pilots tend to be set initially at 1.75.. I'm also wondering why you have a flat spot, generally thats a lean condition..Have you checked for vacuum leaks[vacuum lines]?? Trying to think of everything, do you know if this monster has had an aftermarket trigger wheel installed?? Its pretty hard to install one incorrectly[ like backwards], but, strange things happen sometimes..
