I was contacted by a member who received a bogus check from MichealThomas@Yahoo.com

Be aware that scammers can easily move around to varying email addresses with free email providers such as Yahoo and Gmail.

Please keep in mind that although one has to register to post, anyone can view the Classified Ads or almost any content on the VRCC website.

Deal with long distance offers in the same way you would deal with people through Craigslist, Ebay or any other geographically dispersed marketplace.

Caveat emptor!

And also caveat venditor!

Better to receive a bogus check than to have sent valid funds and never receive the merchandise. He surely didn't send the item without the check clearing????? So far in all my dealings here and elsewhere everything has been on the up and up.

I have been fortunate to deal with honest forum members (except a member here from MN who screwed me a while back on some bag brackets). I hope he reads this and is thankful that I forgive, but do not forget.
Taking paypal helps (I know there is a fee but there is also peace of mind).
I like Postal Money orders if the buyer or seller does not use paypal. Recieve the MO, ship the stuff-not before.
I have also bought from what must be oldtimers who believe a man's word is his bond and sold me stuff knowing they would be paid. I feel honored and humbled to deal with folks like that-it is something we have almost lost.

I have had great experiences selling trading and buying stuff with members on this board.  I always include my VRCC# on the email when I contact someone or reply to someone, and usually (as I recall) they do too and I do look up that number to see that it is the person Im am communicating with and then I send my part immediately wether its the money or the part.  Not been screwed yet. Lets keep the integrity level high.  It s privelage to be issued a VRCC#

dont even reply to the dude in England that says he has the item in stock.  And dont  pay attention to the ones that want to send a huge check and you send back a check...SCAM

Use (delete this) in your email or some other deletable entry when you make an add in the classifieds, demand VRCC# and use common sense....if its way too good to be true, something is wrong

I always get refrences from the board people.  If people KNOW them, then we're good to go.  Otherwise... Wollow's advise is good.

. . . .  He surely didn't send the item without the check clearing????? . . . .

With folks on this board I have sent the item prior to receiving the check and I have had folks send me the merchandise before receiving my check.  On several occasions, the check and the merchandise crossed in the mail.

Yes, a person has to use common sense.  But on the other hand, in any long distance transaction, one party necessarily must trust the other (whether the money is sent first, or the merchandise is sent first).  The flip side of "don't send the item without the check clearing" is "you surely didn't send the money without receiving the parts."

I figure a person who is registered and has posted for an extended period of time probably was not out to screw me out of a $40 set of taillights, even if his email account is through yahoo.

I always ask for the VRCC member no.  Unless I know of the person or know the person, I have the money in hand before shipping.  If I buy, then I send the payment and wait for the item.

Poor English or "too good to be true" is a red flag to me.

Hey, McDonalds won't even give me my hamburger before I hand them my money and I'm standing right in front of them! Grin. I've had people from this board send stuff before they had time to receive my money and it was due to my VRCC# 5666 which goes back about 10 years. If I'm buying I'm accepting the risk involved, if I'm selling and don't know the buyer I want the funds in my hands first. I had some exhaust header covers for a GL 1800 that I didn't need and offered them free on the Gold Wing classifieds if the shipping was paid. I still waited for the funds before I shipped them out, just good business.

I had a cassifieds as "Black Interstate wanted"

Here is some of the conversation with the "seller"
His name and email address: Thomas Galvin   t.carparts@gmail.com

Thanks Dag for returning my mail.well am located in Ukraine and are the
details of the three(3)  black bikes i have now:

Valkyrie Interstate
1999 VIN NUMBER...... (1hfsc4108xa001901)
MILEAGE....1015MILES PRICE 4500USD
2000 VIN NUMBER...... (1HFSC4115YA1000)
MILEAGE.....1501MILES PRICE 5000USD
2003 VIN NUMBER........(1hfsc34623a601768)
 MILEAGE.... 925MILES PRICE 7500USD

My answer (Never heard back from him)
The 1999 valkyrie interstate vin #1hfsc4108xa001901 this motorcycle has 15958 miles and are for sale in USA.

The Honda Valkyrie Interstate Vin#1hfsc34623a601768 are located in Wisconsin USA and are for sale. The color is not black.

1HFSC4115YA1000 is not a good vin number.

This means that you have not told me the truth and I will never make a trade with you.
