I am the proud owner of a '98 valk.  On the drive home I noticed an "oil" smell....burning oil.  After inspection I noticed oil residue on the left side exhaust.  I removed a few covers and tracked it down to the lower bolt holding on the alternator.  Before I go any further, I thought I would ask around.  Do you think this is from the alternator o-ring not functioning properly?  I have attached a picture for your viewing pleasure Wink

I can tell you that removal of the alternator will result in oil getting on the exterior surfaces in that general area.  It may not be a leak if the PO had the alternator out......did you try cleaning it off real well and then see if it leaks more?

And, check the shift lever seal.  Easy fix...only place mine has had an oil leak, and I've had the alternator out several times.  Don't ask, I live near Rocketman!  ;-)

Judging by the wear marks on the frame, i'd say it has been out.

I cleaned it and then let it idle for 5 min. and that is when I took the picture.
I went ahead and removed the alternator to find the o-ring was damaged and whomever was "in there" applied a lot of sealant in an attempt to avoid putting on a new o-ring Angry

Why they wouldn't put on a $5 o-ring is just laziness.  I will go get one and solve this little problem.
BTW the Valk has 30K miles.

I replaced my alternator with a 85amp new model from a a Wing. I rode it about 3K miles and just noticed that when it is about 100 degrees outside and I flog my bike, it will drip infrequently from the bottom of that bolt. I know the new alternator had a new o-ring. However, due to my inexperience when installing the alternator (it's actually easy if you follow the tutorial to the letter), I suppose I may have damaged it, or the chinese o-ring sucks. I will be removing it again this weekend and replacing the o-ring. I need to replace the rubbers inside anyway, as they had dislocated themselves. I ordered all new parts proactively. There can't be a leak from anywhere else on that side. It drips right straight down on the exhaust. Freaked me out when I smelled it. And Hondas don't leak...
