Simply Awesome!!!

« on: July 06, 2010, 08:07:18 PM »

Greetings all,

Disclaimer. This is not my bike, seriously, not my bike!!!

A friend of mine had a hydro lock incident.  tickedoff It apparently filled up the crankcase with fuel also. Spoke to him yesterday and he said that he had found a mechanic to come out to his house to take a look at it.

Bottom line: His bike is apart in his garage and the part that broke is a cast piece of the transmission case.  Cry The piece I believe holds a seal or shaft through to the engine as I understand from him.

He said that the mechanic that is doing the work said that he could weld the part back onto the case.  Undecided

Has anyone ever had any experience with welding a cast part of a case such as this????

Sorry that I can't be more specific, he is going to try and send me a picture of the item.
Thanks for any insight,

Charles

I remember seeing a trans case on evilbay recently.  I checked every page but it must have sold already.  Sorry Bud.

You can weld the case but a piece that holds a shaft or seal I would have to be very skeptical. A non machined part is ok when you get into machined surfaces its not such a good idea. Unless you have some way to re-true the piece plus the strength may not be there. I would try a used case even if you have to buy a whole motor sometimes Pinwall has them pretty cheap that a piece may have broke off from a different part that you dont need.

Depends on what you call pretty cheap.  When I looked last night, the cheapest one i saw was $8-900.  New tranny cover is a couple of hundred from hdl.

Yes, bought a used bike with a busted upper transmission case because I knew a welder that could repair.
Welder did a nice job and it never cause a problem. The break was a non machined service, but repair was necessary for strength as well as oil retention.

Also saw a lot of welded case repairs on early Honda 750-4's because of drive chain breakage.
Some even on the case split surface.

But if you can get a used part for 40 to 90 dollars, do it before welding a part.
