I know this is probably best on the tech forum...but I figure this place gets more traffic.

I took the rear tire off my bike, took it to the local Honda Dealer to have a tire mounted before heading to Bellaire.  When I picked it up this evening the service manager was gone.  I simply picked up the ticket paid for it at the parts counter, showed the paid ticket to the mechanic, collected my tire and left.

I got a call 10 minutes later when I was on the road from a lady in the office saying that my bearing was bad and needed to be replaced.  I have not noticed any noise whatsoever. 

What should I look for to tell if what they are telling is correct?

The bearing is best inspected manually with the wheel off. Should roll smoothly with absolutely no roughness or "play" in-out or up-down. Stick your finger in the center of the bearing where the axle goes and roll inside of the bearing(the outside is pressed in place)to feel for roughness or movement in the other directions. there should be NONE at all.   Any one good with pictures want to help here?

I wouldnt trust the mechanic to know this because its a HONDA dealer......lol......but if the internal spacer isint perfectly straight it will bind against the inner race of the bearing being tested and make it hard to turn the race and it will feel rough.  If you cant manage to hold it straight by hand while testing the bearing, then insert the axle fron the oppostie side you are testing the bearing and insert it far enough to straighten out the spacer.

Bearings are cheep, changing them on the road isnt any fun, ask me how I know. buy them at a bearing house and do it your self, not that hard, you wont regreat it, Walt.....

Land Elephant a really heavy pile the miles on kind of guy.

Had his bearings replaced every 10 thousand miles.

But the fellow above mentioned a manual inspection should be sufficiant.

Any doubt change them out.

New seal as well of course.

Outer smaller bearing is usually the one to go.

So look on the other side of the wheel that is not on the drive shaft side and check it really good.

If you are not comfortable with doing this yourself, plenty of folks out there could help you.

Obviously with the right tools, this job is a snap.

Of course I can accomplish this little job with a shade tree knowledge with out these tools.

Proceed without the proper tools at your own risk.

You can damage the wheel to the point of destruction and it will be of no use at that point.

Use the bearing puller is my advice to all that are not familiar with this operation.

I personally don't think the bearings are bad, however I'm probably going to try to find some generic ones (compliments of Jeff K's generic parts page) or have some overnight shipped.

If you have a Napa close by, they will have the left rear bearing (6204) in stock. Its the one that will fail, if one is going to fail. No need to change the right side double roller...IMO.

Don't feel bad...I've known him for YEARS...and i can't keep his name straight. +1  Those are my thoughts EXACTLY....no matter how many times i get scolded for saying/doing just that. I track that stuff on the Rune board....there are MANY, MANY folks that ONLY go to the General board....period. MANY.................

In fact, things of note technically on the Rune....many of them...we have "sticky" posted up top of the Tech area....so they always stay up top and easy to find. If i had a dollar for every time someone posts on the GENERAL board...."hey, what about this?"....and it is covered in a sticky up top in PLAIN VIEW on the Techy board....i could just about quit the day job. THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS. Folks can moan about that until they're blue in the face, but....it's not going to change human nature. MANY folks just come to the General board....on many different boards....cause...that's where the vast majority seem to hang out.

On the Rune board, we don't give anyone grief for posting tech stuff on the General board. We may POLITELY suggest they ALSO check out the Tech board....but....we don't blame em' for posting their question on the General board.....

Too many other more important things to get upset about....you know, politics, religiion...all the other "sticky" topics that get thrown out there.  Roll Eyes
