Did some maintenance recently on my 97 and not sure what it is but there is a sound coming from the rotation of the rear wheel, on the jack or off. It reminds me of the sound of rubber squeaking. It is not the brakes. It kind of only makes the sound as rotation starts but not while continuing to rotate. The wheel turns with the normal amount of freeness.
What was replaced:
Wheel Dampers (OEM)
Both wheel bearings including the "Right bearing in the left bearing pocket" mod (Including Nilos ring)
2000 wheel and disk on my 97

The wheel dampers went in really tight. I lubed the Nilos ring with WD40 in the possibility it was the metel to metal contact but that wasn't it. Have about 350 miles on it since the job was completed.

Maybe have to bring it up at this Saturday's session on the "Anatomy of A Fat Ladies Rear End" and let Dan hear it first hand.......

If you want to take it apart again you can lightly grease them but you should also grease the metal to metal contact points not allot just a dab. My wife always goes to Frankenmuth when she goes to visit her mother.

Are you sure its the dampers??  I'm wondering if you tightened the axle before tightening/re-tightening the 4 differential retainers..

Yea theres always one smart a## in the crowd Grin No seriously I didn't believe it either till is happened to me. Its just a small squeak sounds almost as if a hubcap on a car is a bit loose. I looked at everything else and when all checked out ok I had no choice but to suspect the dampers so put just a dab of grease on them and no noise. It happened just rolling slowly with no load on the throttle.  Cheesy

So.... what kind of indication or symptoms do you get with bad or worn dampers anyhow?

I would have suspected squeaking bearings....

Actually there is no noise with bad dampers just alot of slop in the drive train. Its really easy to feel when you go from gas to coast. It seems the new ones cause the problems and its kinda like leather shoes that squeek  Cheesy
