DMV
« on: July 15, 2010, 07:57:02 AM »

Can anyone tell me how to register a vehicle in California.
I'm buying a Studebaker in Virginia [flying there to pick it up].
I,m driving it out of Virginia immediately.
Virginia tells me there are no temporary tags or permits through them.
In Virginia the seller has to send plates back to DMV.
California says no temp permits or tags available to use till I register it.
California tells me the car has to be there at California DMV to register it.

I'll be able to ride my Valk soon. [back operation]
Now it's Valk related

Thanks
Dan

Check out DMV web site.  Very easy.  If you have AAA, you can do it there, much faster.

I don't know about the registration process in CA,

A dealer in VA can issue a temp teg for a car that they sell.

As a private party you can purchase a trip permit from VA DMV to transport the car.

Here is a link to the VA DMV's info about it: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/dmvnet/trip_permit/intro.asp

The seller may have to purchase the trip permit for you, and it's only valid for 3 days.

I bought a car in NY a few years ago and used this to get it back to VA.

hope this helps.

Ask the guy if he will let you borrow the plates till ya get home, then mail them back to him.

Or
CALL CA DMV and ask them for asistance.

Or
If you have a Bill of Sale the VA title in hand properly signed,
hang a handwritten IN TRANSIT sign in the window.
Then, stay the hell out of Colorado as they don't like those signs.

and  MAKE SURE ya have INSURANCE, with a card in hand on the vehicle.

MY insurance agent made one up for me and put a 30 day insurance policy on it till he could get a picture and do it properly.  Once they saw the vehicle and insured it, the temp start date was my real policy effective date.

If none of the above work, rent a Penske truck and trailer to haul it home.  1 way rental.  Make sure you have a reservation on the originating end, Virginia, with a drop off point in California.   Cost ya a plane ticket to get there.  Truck and trailer to get home.   Plus fuel, food, motel and etc.

Most times when I bought cars all you needed was a bill of sale and previous owners title and it be insured. Then you drive it the most direct route home........JB.

I always just take a license plate from home and use it to bring a vehicle back to my state.  Just don't get pulled over.  If you do, just show them the title and bill of sale, both signed by the seller.  My car insurance automatically covers any new purchases for 30 days, or so.

Borrowing the other guy's plate is a good idea, but most smart people won't let their plate drive away (I won't).

Needs to be currently registered when you go see DMV. Think ya have like 10 to 14 days to register once you get to CA. If you can plan ahead, make an appointment so you don't have to stand in line for hours. You need to call your Insurance Co. and have them fax you a rider as proof of Ins. You need the "pink" signed over to you, and proof of Insurance to register in CA. If you are towing the rig... all the same applies... if on a dolly with rear wheels on the ground, including current registration. If its registered as non-op it needs to be on a cargo trailer with none of the car wheels touching the highway... its just another load of whatever. $ to register = price paid for car. Get a new owner friendly receipt from person selling. Yrmv...

Ok here it is.
I asked for some kind of temp tag or paperwork to drive the car.
I have 4 responses from Va DMV, 2 from email, 2 from phone calls, 3 different stories.
2 said to license, register vehicle in Va. When it got to Ca to request refund from Va,
then register it in Ca.
1 said there's no such thing, to check with Ca DMV.
1 gave a form #VSA 42, the form does not show up on the DMV site, no one else knew anything about it.  I will ask about it in Va.

California DMV. 4 responses from phone calls. The wait at the office is horrendous.
Once again I asked about temp tags or paperwork to drive the car
3 said no such thing, to check with Va DMV. 1 of those did mention a permit to drive car OUT
of Ca.
4th response knew immediately, exactly what I wanted. "One Trip Permit" Reg 1-402T
She assured me the permit was good for either into or out of Ca.
The number does not show up on the Ca DMV site, you can't pick it up at AAA, you have to get it at
DMV in person. 18 bucks. One horrendous wait, I'm good to go.

After the trip permit expires, verify the long term status once you park it in Ca. Can be very costly to register a rig that hasn't been registered for a long time. $20 bucks a year for a "non-operational" (non-op) tag will save you some big bucks down the road.

Thanks for the reminder but this car is a driver and I will continue to drive it,
so it will be registered.

That sounds like the same thing that VA has.  The only sticking point that i could see was that you needed to be a VA resident to legally purchase one.

In VA it's only  $5 but the seller of the car would have to purchase it for you.

It does look like it can be purchased online and then printed out on your printer.
