I know most everyone here is an experienced rider, but heard something this weekend which I hate and is worthy of a little safety reminder. One rider was killed and two critically injured when one of the riders made contact with two other riders while riding on I-57 in Southern Illinois. I love riding with a group but it is important to know who your riding with and make sure everyone is willing to give the proper spacing needed to prevent such an accident. Don't know any specific details but it is truly a tragedy as all three were only in their 30's. For you who pray, please join me in prayer for the two injured and the families of all involved. Hef

I see this a lot - even with experienced riders. Seems that they think it's "cool" to ride as close as they can, to each other. I have ridden with a couple groups, that felt that, so I just fall back, and ride WAY behind the group. I'd rather BE cool, than LOOK cool...
I have ridden 57, and it's a pretty darn nice, straight road. But, traffic DOES seem to do 75+ mph on there, pretty consistent.
It's for reasons like this, that I very seldom ride with groups. I'll take my chances with MY riding, not others...

headed out with a bunch of wingers (varying expertise)... Didn't like a few things so a friend & I broke out from the group and did our own thing. It was an 8day trip ...not sure if anyone got offended..oh well, safety first. I enjoy groups but sometimes you can't beat just you & the big lady floatin down the road. Always sad to hear of losing fellow motorcycle enthusiasts.

When people ride in a manner I consider dangerous... I say so. In my opinion, everyone on the ride is responsible for everyone else's safety as well as their own. I tend to ride with 3 or 4 guys a trust a lot. We have rules against lane sharing. You never approach beside someone unless it's clear from a hand signal the leader knows you're coming. When on the highway, Squealy and I will ride a couple bike lengths apart, staggered, but ONLY when it's the two of us. More than that... and we stretch it out for safety. I usually lead, and I had him ride poit for a while on the way home from IZX. I tended to anticipate all his lane changes and beat him there (Like a good tail gunner SHOULD) and he said it was like he was following me, even though I was trailing.
My condolences to the families.

Riding with friends is good, but I am at my best when riding alone. Hoser

When I first got my Valkyrie....I had it like 3 months and I got an invite to go to Helen GA with the GWRRA. We rode every day and did lots of cool rides......Cherahola Skyway, Deals Gap.....was wonderful. The first day we did Deals Gap and all was safe and fine. I think the Gold Wingers were a bit scared of the dragon. The next day we rode more familiar (to them I guess) roads and I got suckered into their unsafe riding. Way too close together. We were in staggard formation with OVERLAP of bikes......not just no spacing but almost axle to axle (not side by side, but rear to front axle)and doing 45-55 in twisties.
I wish I would have broke out and NOT participated, but I was the new guy and didnt want to ROCK THE BOAT.
The next day ride. As we gathered for a route briefing and all. I did speak up and said, "if we are going to ride like we did yesterday Im riding TEC (tail end charlie)" They got a tad torqued that I accused them of being unsafe but told me I was welcomed to ride in the back if I wanted to. They seemed to be not as close that day but still too close in my book.
The good news is no one had any problems , but if someone did it would have been ugly.
