Started the year counting down for my retirement at the end of the year.
In February had a slight heart attack and thought O.K. I'll be able to leave a little sooner and with the disability a little more money.
Same day I lost my mother at 92 years old.
Well got better and Dr. said go back to work, so back to original plan.
Well last week just before INZANE, I was asked how definite my retirement plans were.
I was kind of dumbfounded and then I was informed that I was being considered for a promotion to Deputy Chief on my full-time Fire Dept.
So now it looks like I stay working for 5 more years, I'll max out on my pension with 30 years and at a higher amount which is a no-brainier.
So now I'll be a Deputy Chief on one department and a Captain on the other.
All becomes offical July 28th, so now I'll just wait and see what else happens before the year ends.

Ok...gotta be careful here, as it sounds like this is all a done deal.  Just want to suggest you look at that "small heart attack" the way you would a "small metallic noise" on the Valk.  You wouldn't ignore it, you would look for the cause.  It's sometimes a "tap on the shoulder" type reminder that it's time to slow down.  That richer pension won't do much good if you aren't healthy enough to enjoy the $.

This is coming from someone who just retired earlier that he wanted, from a job he loved, because of the above.  There is some health related "writing on the wall" that made me fear that maybe there aren't as many vibrant years left to do all of the things on my bucket list.  I hate "should'a, would'a, coulda's".

Just a thought.

Good job Captain, give her hell , we can rest when we are dead.

I myself, I am just hanging around to see what happens next.

But take care of that ticker and it will take care of you.

Have you ever considered Yoga for Stress Relief?

Hey Captain...it was great to see you again, even though we didn't get to chew the fat like we did at the CBR. Look forward to seeing you on a future ride.

Unless you love your job and it isn't injurious to you, a heat attack is an eye opener.  I think statistics are on your side that if your live through the first, you have far greater odds of survival than those of us who have not had the experience.
I worked with the Feds for my retirement and saw many a co-worker over the years stretching their years to squeeze out more money for their retirement only to be stricken with a terminal illness.
I have cancer in my family (100% on both sides thus far).  I know my fate and retired as soon as I could (50 with 30) for that reason.  There's a point where enough is enough-enough work-enough prep for retirement.  If you've done the right things and invested into your retirement system and have everything paid for, is it worth working 5 more years?
I heard one of my co-workers that retired say to me that with all the crap you here "in the hallway" about retirement, it seems that everyone that retired seemed to have what they needed-some more-some less, depending on circumstances and character.Congrats and good luck.
