Reading Clymer manual in wee hrs of morning read "insert narrow end into hub first" interpreted as insert narrow end first (into final drive). Microfiche shows wide end into final drive first. Of course it's all back together again, but haven't ridden it yet. Did I damage anything by torqueing down axle with spacer (#20 in micro) reversed?

Not to worry: The correct way mearly creates a better seal from dust getting into the hub area. The bearing has it's own seal so no bearing damage will occur. Never use a pressure car wash wand on your bike. Just a light hose and rinse.

If you are talking about the spacer that sits inside the final drive and can move around a bit, and you can pull it out.....it cannot be put in backwards...it simply wont go in far enough to get the rest of the parts on the axle.

Well, took it all apart again because I found a brand new broken & torn o-ring on the floor while picking up the tools! Yup, Chris is right, only goes in one way, another Clymer typo & backward microfiche pic.
