I was asked about this filter a few days ago.

I have used it for a long time.

In fact it has been so long I don't know if I have the pre-filter in or not.

If memory serves me correctly, I didn't put it in at the get go.

I think ya can only vote once, but we will see.

After trying it without the pre filter I found that with it in, I get a perfect mixture (judging by color of the spark plugs)

With OEM filter and Cobra pipes I was running a bit rich but didnt mind too much

Changed to a K&N and most people seemed to be running them without the pre filter, so thats how I started.....it was a tad too lean.

Added the pre filter in and it was just right.  LOL   sounds like that three bears story!!!!!!

On my purple standard, with an Interstate Ignition, Interstate carb springs, and Cobra pipes....no prefilter.  I later switched to glasspacks/stacks, still with no pre-filter.  Its still going strong under Blackducks command up in Kansas.

I have the pre-filter in my Interstate but I will be pulling it out soon to see if it will help my fuel mileage.  Unless you are running a ton of ignition advance(more than 6 degrees for some strange reason), I don't think its possible to run one tooo lean with the mods we all have available. Of course there are special situations, such as RJ for example who has his heads ported and such...but for most folks, running without the prefilter will do nothing more than make the bike run better and consume a little less fuel on the highway.  IMO, YMMV as always.

I've also got the front of the tank raised with one of BigBF's cylinders.

When I did that mod it perked the old boy up some......

No and yes are running neck and neck.

10 to 12

Personally, with a stock air box a clean paper filter will perform quite well.

K and N with a airbox mod, jetting , and then you can feel the difference,.

But that's just my opinion.

Hi,
The K&N was suggested to me by Western Honda of Scottsdale, AZ. They said otherwise it'd be a lag in time cuz they'd have to order an orig. type filter. This bcuz the bike is over 10 yrs and they don't stock the air fltr anymore. West. Honda is family owned. Big corporate owned Apache Honda turned me away once my bike was 10 years old. I bot it new and can't bring myself to sell it. Anyway, I was not told of a pre-filter. What blew me away was a few minutes after I left their place I got on a fwy entry ramp and gassed it and it was a heck of a lot more powerful than I ever felt! The last time I got such a powerboost was when I put in the 6ยบ adv. trigger wheel. Now I feel that I have two JATO units. Remember JATO? Jet Assisted Take Off?

I don't think I ever voted on this one. . . .  I use the pre-filter, so it would have all been tied up; 15-15. When I put the K & N on the Fat Lady 4 or 5 years ago I didn't know 'not' putting it on was an option. In fact, first I heard of not using the pre-filter was last summer. When I dropped the tank and clean the filter later in the year, I noticed the pre-filter had 'caught' a nice little pile of leafs and 'gunk.'  Maybe it was that way during every cleaning and I just never noticed? Regardless, it made my choice easy. I left it on. . . .

P.S. - This isn't like the Car Tire debate is it? One side calling the other retarded?  Cheesy
