Hi, Someone was telling me I couldn't make an interstate out of a standard. Something about hard to put a fairing on and the wiring harness, etc. Is this true?
Thanks

Anything can be done, but with the prices of interstates at about 8K, why would you do it? It seems to me that you would have more money tied up in it than you could ever get out of it after buying all the necessary parts, not to mention the labor involved. Jim

You would find there are a ton of parts that you would need to accomplish what you consider!

I'm almost done with converting to IS from STD. I had to paint the bike in the process as I had tins of all colors. I bet I have parts from half the states plus Canada and many stops over at HDL for hardware items. Not sure why I did it as stated one could just locate one. I had a nice STD converted to Tour and thought why not take it to the next step.
I got the trunk, fairing and bags back last week. I think the rest will be done this week. I got the fairing and trunk back together. The fairing isn't all that hard. Getting a fairing is the work. The IS harness wasn't all that bad if you have a good IS harness. I just worked it in next to the old one and just unplugged and plugged. A few connectors didn't match up so I had to change the IGN switch, turn signal and kick stand switches.
Gather items was the big chore. Took most of last winter. Big items are the fairing with mount. The IS tank, trunk, radio/controls, and PODS. I found a left over set of the fog lights. There are lots of little items to track down. Have the online HDL parts diagram was a huge help.
I will post some pictures when done. I went from almond and cream to burgandy and cream.

As we all know anything is possible when you have the knowledge and drive to accomplish it. I like to see people with that kind of drive, I once had it and don't anymore. Go for it, enjoy it and good luck. (There are still a lot of nice Interstates out there) Just kidding.

If you are riding and it is a must that you keep your eyes on the road, you are riding too fast.

I did it in 2003 , the IS was not imported in Switzerland and knowing the difficulties to homologate an Import (don't ask how I know ). As mentionned , the harness was my main concern but finally proved to be quite simple, except for some connectors (my std is a 97 model and with particularities for the swiss market). Just be patient but it's nice Winter project ! Francois_VRCC863

I just bought a low mileage IS for $6K even. Now I have both an IS and a Standard.
Why put yourself thru all that if you don't HAVE to?
After all... you COULD be RIDING right?

i just finished installing tourer bags and an interstate trunk on the standard. a while back i went with a memphis shades fairing. had to move the headlight out 2" and down 1/4" but it works great with good airflow around the engine. i'm in s. florida so pods are out of the question.

I might think you're crazy for doing it, but your paint job looks WONDERFUL. Very nice use of stock patterns with non stock colors. And some non stock patterning as well. That one will look GREAT when you're done!
