I screwed up, i removed the 4 nuts on the pumpkin/axle connection Why? I didn't read the the instructions first and did it from memory . Any way the axle and pumpkin slipped out of the shaft. Does anyone know a solution or where to find one? TIA (The tires off)

No biggie then, just put it back in. I routinely take mine off anytime I remove the rear wheel. While its off I change the oil in it, clean and relube the splines (hub and pinion cup) and clean and relube the drive shaft splines. -RP

besure totighten the 4 bolts last after everything else has been tightened down....then tighten the 4 nuts....see shop talk

You say "the pumpkin and axle slipped out of the shaft", what exactly are you referring to? Did it come apart from the driveshaft where it enters the pumpkin? The only thing the axle can slip out of is the pumpkin itself, so are you saying the entire final drive came off or just the five fingered section inside that meshs with the wheel? In any case, you don't really have a problem, I'm just trying to figure out what you're talking about. When changing a tire, most of us will remove the entire final and often the driveshaft as well, service the unit as a whole with new three O-rings and a thrust washer, then remount it. The only time I didn't service the entire final drive is when I had a flat that tore up the tire only 2k miles after I had installed it.

Good, so i can probably just stick it back in. ( thats what she said) I was in a hurry to get the tire off, I got home from work at 1830 and daylight was waning. Working in the dark is rough and I wanted to bring the wheel in early. Whats that they say?" haste makes waste" I kind of figured it was no biggie, but i wanted to make sure. I have the service manual on my desktop computer, so i will work on it in the AM. Hey "Dark Siders" did you know that they do not make the Cooper Zeon 2XS in our size any more? Thanks for all the help, This board has never failed to help me!!!

You need to remove it anyway! Pull the driveshaft out of the pinion cup on the rearend, and service it! Needs to be done every 10,000 miles anyway!

May as well pull the driveshaft out of the pumpkin and inspect it for wear and clean it.
Just set a towel or something on the floor (so you don't scratch/crunch the pumpkin), and pick it up by the drive shaft. Hold it about an inch above the floor and tap on the pinion cup with hammer. It should pop out shortly.
Inspect. Clean. Clean pinion cup. Lightly lube with grease (not paste) and stick back in the rear end. Make sure the seal is pushed all the way in.
To put back in the swing arm:
Stick it in the swing arm. Tip the swing arm up as high as it will go (the shocks need to be pulled). Get the 4 studs more or less lined up with the holes...wiggle the crap out of it till they will enter and seat. If the pumpkin goes all the way in, the shaft is in the u-joint. It cannot miss, there is not room in the swing arm.
The trick is getting that swing arm up high and wiggling the heck out of the pumpkin while pushing it in. Usually takes no more than about 20 seconds.

Thank You Daniel! I am on it now, Stopped for the rain (badly needed) hope to finish soon. New Darkside tire being mounted, A Cooper zeon sport, no more zeon 2xs made to fit the valk! Suns out! Back at it.
