OLD HICKORY. TN.

« on: August 07, 2010, 08:36:36 AM »

I am ready to install a Goodyear Assurance T/T, 205/60-r16 on my 2001 Standard. My question is since I installed Progressive shocks that are 1 1/2 inches shorter than the originals, am I going to have clearance problems. Mine are 11 1/2" from eye to eye and I believe the originals are 13" from eye to eye. I set them to where they are pretty firm when I hit a bump in the rode so there is not much travel up and down. I also ride solo. Not sure what other problems I am in store for, if any.
   Thanks in Advance, Simon

Well if you have ridden a ways and have not smelled rubber burning then you should be good to go!!

I didn't smell anything, but with my wife on the back, at slow speed with a bump, I could hear a squeak. I checked it out and it was rubbing on a tiny bit of the nut cage that I thought I had cut down far enough.

Recommendation here:
Place the bike on your jack, remove the shocks and jack up the rear wheel (and spin it) untill you see where the tire will rub if it does. If I had of kept riding, it would have cut through the side wall. Shocked Shocked Not good. Like, I said, I thought that I had trimmed the nut cage far enough.

If it will only rub on the underside of the fender then yes you or she may smell burning rubber.

Ride safe and enjoy Smiley

I did the nut cage mod on my 95 standard and never had any problems with the Kumho 205x65. I run the same tire on my 99 Valk3 interstate and did not have to do the nut cage mod as the fender is setup slightly different.

If you do the nut cage mod... cut it ALL off.  ALL or nothing.

I had to grind about 1/2 the thickness out of one of the nuts too.

Before going to longer (13in) shocks if  We were riding two up sometimes my 205/60/16 would rub on the little metal box  in the top of the fender that the wiring for the rear lights plug lives in. I was running 416s with 70 psi of air in them still wasn't enough.
