It's Always good to get back home after a nice long ride. On August 7th I did an Iron Butt ride from Denver, CO to Beaver, Utah & right Back to Denver, CO. I woke up at 12:50 AM, got up & shaved & showered & got dressed & went to Great Scotts Eatery, a 24 hour restaurant, in Denver, had some black coffee & a side order of Hash-Browns. At 3:00 AM sharp I started up the Valk's engine, rode next door to a Conoco gas station & fueled up. Then I set out for Beaver, UT. After that it was pretty much uneventful. I took Colorado Hwy 36 to I-25 to I-70 headed west. Going over Vail Pass, which is over 10,000 feet, it got pretty cold. I do not know what the temperature was but with my heavy duty winter gloves on my hands were starting to ache from the cold. Pretty dang cold it was. Nothing more till I got to Richfield, UT where it rained like the devil. LOTS of rain from there to Beaver Then back almost all the way across Utah but not nearly as bad. The rest of the trip was uneventful. Got to the finish at 8:20 PM. So, from 3:00 AM till 8:20 PM the same day...how many hours is that? No one else showed up for the ride. Just me by my lonesome. About 20 people said they were going. Maybe I left on the wrong date. Anyway...Always ride safely. tommy t IBA 1990

I,ve been to Beaver, UT on the way to Zion.  Not much for scenery after Grand Junction.  Sounds like a great run!

That is the reason I always rode alone 80 % of the time.    My buddy, may he R.I.P., would call saying hey, I'm headed out, or he would call the night before saying we got a problem, but I'll call ya in the morning.   Hell of a good riding buddy.     This is a map of some of the roads we rode on in the US over the years.

Other riders, I have set on a street corner several times waiting to not have anyone show and or have the courtesy to call ya.

Seems, they always post something long after you have left home saying, OH, I'm not going to be there, do ahead without me.    Ya find it after it is all over and done with.

Congratulations! That's a tough ride to go it solo. . .   I think it's a 'must do', but I know it's not for some people. I did mine about 5 years ago, after failing one attempt. The first try was stright up Michigan 2-lanes, across the bridge, then across the U.P. to Houghton. Very poor planning on my part. Construction did us in, but I don't think we could've made it even with perfect roads. I basically did everything wrong from departure time to not checking the route. In the middle of no-where in the U.P. we all realized we couldn't make the time. So, we stopped at a Mom & Pop breakfast Buffet for a couple of hours, then cruised slowly home stopping at all the sites. The ride ended up being one of the best of the year for our little band! Anyway, the 2nd try was all superslabs; straight down I-69, to I-65 through IN, then KY, into Tenn and back. Despite two rainstorms and getting separated, we made it with an hour to spare AND we remained firends! Ahh, the joys of motorcycling! uglystupid2

It's all fun...long rides, short rides, even to the grocery store for a loaf of bread. In 1990 I did a Bun Burner 1500 on a Harley Electra Glide Classic FLHTC & the route went through Death Valley & Yosemite National Park & a lot of desert in California & Nevada. Seven of us started the ride & two quit in Death Valley. The ride was June 8th & 9th, 1990. I don't know how many actually finished the ride. My Harley blew both base gaskets in Death Valley & was blowing oil on my lower legs. What a trip. It was about 130 degrees in Death Valley. One of the riders on a Harley passed out after getting off his bike at Stove Pipe Wells at the Chevron Gas Station. We dragged him inside & put him under a swamp cooler & gave him some Gator Aide. He rode off towards back home. In 1986 I did the USA four Corners & went thru all 48 states. That is a totally different storey tho. In 1956 I rode a Harley 74 FLH up to Indianapolis, IN for the race. Broke down twice on the way there & did not make the race. I was 16 years old then. Still have never made the race. It's on my bucket list tho. Motorcycling has been a big part of my whole life. Both my sons ride Harleys & they are in Sturgis right now. They will be doing a SaddleSore 1000 on the way from my house back to their houses in California after Sturgis. There are a MILLION or more stories out there. Ride safe all of ya. tommy t IBA 1990

Glad you had a good ride......

I like them all short rides, long rides, in between rides, solo rides and up to 4 bike rides.
Above 4 bikes preferr to split into smaller groups.

Really dislike riding in the rain - more and more---.

If you wait on others to ride you may never ride. The rule I use is you get 15 minutes grace on start time, then you are left, if you arrive after 15 minutes do not stop just come on and track me down.

Waiting is not riding, so be on time or early, show a little courtesy.

That's about 1060 miles in 15 hours and 20 minutes which is about 69 mph average!  Me thinks you were speeding a bit  Grin.  Would have loved to join you, we were camping in Colorado Springs over the weekend.  Sorry nobody showed.

Stopped for gas only. NO lollygogging. Was going a bit fast in some places.  You know how it is when you look down at your speedometer & see how fast you are going over the speed limit & you are surprised that you are doing that fast... & then slow down some but end up over the speed limit again. Oh well... I am on vacation for two weeks & am planning to ride up to the top of Pikes Peak during this time off. Love that ride... a real CHALLENGE part of the ride.  tommy t IBA 1990
