My 99 std has a unusual noise when I pull in the clutch and let the throttle return to idle. I hear a scraping noise coming from the rear, right side. Sounds like something is touching each time the rear wheel/tire goes around. No vibration or heat. Any suggestions? I'll let the experts ride her in the parking lot Thursday night if nobody has any ideas in the meantime. L

Rear wheel bearings? Seems to be the current answer to most questions. Maybe that genius Jeff will see this and answer it.

Sounds like something is touching each time the rear wheel/tire goes around. Doc, Not sure if you run a car tire or not, but my valkyrie was doing the same thing awhile back and it was a bad C/T. I had a bubble on the sidewall of the tire, and every revolution it would make a noise as it hit the swingarm. Bought another C/T and the noise went away.

Thanks Victor. I haven't checked the tire. Not darkside but I suppose the m/c tire could do the same thing. L

TJ, my ole horse shoe partner, is on the right track. It doesn't have so much to do with IQ as it does just having the sensitivity to tune into the needs of the phat lady. Just listen to her needs and she will tell you all you need to know!
Doc, feel free to give me a call and I will be glad to give you a "reading". But in the mean time, you might play with the idea that it is likely a wheel bearing, hopefully and most likely on the rear.
I love SeaFoam as much as anybody, but don't ever put it in (a) Pumpkin (colored Valk) on a Tuesday before dark unless you just pushed away from a big gut bomb Mexican dinner washed down with a Shiner.

If it's only happening when the clutch is in and the engine speed goes down, it's unlikely to be a wheel bearing or tire, UNLESS: the engine noise is masking the abnormal noise when it's at higher than idle. Doc? You're the only one who can answer that one.

Thanks Mark. Yep, it's the engine noise masking it. After all, I do have Cobra shorties without baffels on the girl. That masks most everything. I'll let the experts look at her tomorrow night and give me expert opinions. L

It's got to be a GS thingy I think the real story is that Jeff is so friggin' old he's experienced every possible problem a motorcycle can have. With age comes wisdom, so he must have a ton of wisdom.

No doubt Mark is spot on with the comments related to age and experience. Now, if I can just recall some of what I have gleaned over the years. I'll work on that right after I find my glasses. Why did I come inside? To get a glass of water? No, GLASSES, that's right. I remember now! ~Jeff
